I was told a group bought the old I -70 Speedway east of Kansas City and was going to install a dirt track oval and a new Drag Strip . Any KC people know anything about this??
I heard the same thing yesterday. They say it will be called KCIR. Sure hope this not a rumor. I hear the owner of the track in Topeka is the one doing this.
It was going around on Facebook back in March or so. The chatter was the owner of Topeka and Forrest Lucas had money in it. It did say there would not be a dirt track, drag strip only. I did not see that they would be calling it KCIR, but that might be true. I got on the county assessor's website and it did show that the property had exchanged hands and the name was something racing related. Definitely agree that I hope something real comes out of this.
Not sure about the dragstrip, but the circle track boards are saying that the oval will open in 2019.
Here is what I could come up with quickly. It only mentions the dirt track, but I saw another post somewhere that mentioned that a dragstrip would be built. Not sure where I saw that. https://www.sprintsource.com/ibracn/rumors/?i=61651
I talked with guy who knows a guy that delivered a load of steel for bleachers. I believe the owners of Heartland Park Topeka are building the tracks. The oval is going to be dirt at the same location as the old track was, the 1/8 mile is going to be just behind it.
Officially announced by Heartland Raceway Park today. http://ptenmedia.com/i70/. They are calling it I70 Motorsports Park and planning on a dirt track and a dragstrip and opening in 2019.
Damn Happy about this, although Topeka is still closer to me. I am the old school drag strip kinda guy, I love MO-KAN, its just too far for me to do often.
So when will the housing developments spring up around it? Just askin'...don't let history repeat itself.
