I need to install a 48 ford car Steering wheel on a F1 Steering shaft.
I think I will need to cut the F1Steering shaft ,and graft a 48 ford Steering shaft on to it. Am I correct, or mis guided ?

    Thanks,
    jim

Clarify "shaft". If you mean an axle or a hub then 48 and older car wheels swap out with Ford PU. My 46 Coupe has 15" Ford PU wheels all the way around.

I don't like welding on a steering shaft. When I put an F-1 box/column in my car, and wanted to use an old steering wheel with a taper and keyway, I had my machinist buddy cut the end of the shaft with the proper taper. It needed shortening anyway, so why not do both operations at the same time?

That's a good Idea. I have a welder friend that does my welding for me. He welded up my dragster ,so I will have to use him. Need to make some machinist friends. :)

memory says ... ford tended to use leftover car parts on the next year's trucks... I would check them to see if they can interchange...

That is correct , car is keyed , truck is splined . I have very carefully cut my own key slot with a Dremel tool . It is still in service as of today .

A '49-'50 car steering wheel will fit straight onto the F1 splined shaft if that's an option.
Personally I prefer the look of the '49-'50 wheels and horn rings.
