I have a 63 monterey with a 390 fe. I want to switch to electronic distributor.Any suggestions.I bought a MSD but because of the water tank is in front of the thermostat, the cap is to big.and I don't want to reroute the whole cooling system. Are their smaller distributors?

I put a pertronix in my 62 Galaxy .7 years and no problems.

  5. Couple that with a MSD 6A box and you'll have a all-but-bulletproof ignition.... You could use a Ford box, but they're harder to wire in.

Pertronix is a small cap. I get them with black with male terminals so I can use large diameter HEI style wires and not have to fight with getting them in the cap. I also use Pertronix coil and wires (black so they look stock and kind of disappear) so it's a complete system.

MSD also makes a ready to run with a small cap that doesn't need a box.

I'm going Pertronix on my FE and my 302 projects. Had food luck with them in the past.

  7. I have used Pertronix successfully. Also have used a modified BIG cap GM HEI. Both worked well. Now have an original Buick back in it with an HEI pick up and reluctor inside. The GM module is on the firewall. This in/on the Straight Eight.

  8. I actually have a Ford distributor wired to a GM module mounted on an aluminum heat sink at the rad support.

I run a Pertronix setup in my '62 Merc, works great for a street car.

As Center-of-the-Galaxie alluded to. It is hard to beat the DuraSpark II setup used in mid 70's pickups. Use an MSD box, or the correct Ford ignition control module ($25 at any parts store) for good street performance.

^^^ is this the Chinese knockoff of the MSD stuff? Don't think I could trust that.

Mid-70's DSII simple as dropping in the distributor and hooking up three wires. Mount a spare module next to the one in operation and you're set.

Yep, have done it several times, easy as pie. Works great, cheap, readily repairable. Looks stock. Bones

Thanks for all your help. Went to Skip White out off Tennessee. Got a TSP small cap and coil for less than 125 bucks. When I call TSP they wanted 190 just for the distributor! I would recommend Skip White they were awesome
