I own a 40 truck banjo. Wanting to convert to open drive. (minus the expensive adaptors.) I found this one which is a 47-48 I believe will the open drive Bolt over onto my 40. Also what do I look for and is 150 to high
The wheel mounting surface to opposite wheel mounting surface distance on a 40 Ford rear is 59 1/2 in. Compare that with yours. I think it's too wide. Unscrew the fill plug and check condition of gears. Also, be sure it's has a gear ratio you desire. 3:78 is the most common. 3:54 is hard to find. 4:11 is not a good highway gear. Gear ratio should be stamped on the center rib of center section below the drive shaft. Divide the little number into the big number to calculate ratio. Read this. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=163427 $150 is a fair price if the rear is good, if the backing plates have all the brakes and hardware and if the drums have not been turned more than .060 in. Stock drums measured 12.000 in.
150 is a good price, considering a kit (if you can't do machine work) is around 300 as I recall, to convert yours to open drive.
The truck rears had special gears. You can't just put pass gears in them. I would use 40 bells and axles if I was building a 40.
I have a rear axle that's a 40. Just wanting to switch the open drive (only) from the 48 to the 40. That's it. No gear chamge
yes but the open drive pinion that accepts the u joint yolk is different than the closed drive pinion so you have to run the ring and pinion that are in the open drive axle.if they are in good shape and a ratio you desire just swap the ring gear onto your current differential carrier and use the complete open drive center section.....preload and backlash will need setup also.
40 is narrower but depending on what you're trying to do and what with it may not matter. $150 is about $300 too light on that rear end with the brakes, all clean, painted, with cables like that. Around here, those open drive rears run $200 to $250 rusty, dirty, and bare.
