What is supposed to be on the end?

I never cut one apart. I suspect it is just a filter to keep debris out.

Geeeeeezs! (way too many) Years ago I had one in that would run for about 5 miles after a fill up. Went nuts over that thing for days. That filter was clogged. In all honesty I never found it... The guy I worked with finely noticed it ran fine with the cap off.

That's the fill tube vent. Without the canister, raw gas would spew forth if filled too quickly.

Ok, but the end is just open? Water could easy get in!

  7. Maybe originally had a rubber tube directed down to avoid the water

My 56 Ford has one that goes out of the tank, snakes up near the left tail light and back over to the center behind the license plate where the filler is. Passes thru the body with a rubber grommet and has no filter. Your cap should not have a vent. Vented caps eliminated these as long as the filler was high up on the car. Some 50-60's cars had very low fillers and the vent had high loops in them always vented to the outside.
