Well I have a little more to do on the mains before I take the block to a freind's shop to line hone it and get to size. The next step I will be checking the cam tunnel. I've ordered a fixture to do this from BHJ, probably won't see it til after the 1st of the new year.

Once I see how the cam tunnel placement is I will have to decide how I plan to correct it or if I decide to enlarge it. I'll have to make a decision then. After these two operations are done I will correct the lifter bores and likely bush them. Deck, Bore, and Hone from there. The block machine work will pretty much be finished at that point.

It would be a good time to enlarge the cam tunnel for roller cam bearings.

I would do a 55mm Babbit if I decide to enlarge it.

I use the same exact set at work to set bore gauges on.... We've had those in the shop for longer than 20 years...;)

Having that fixture sure makes things a lot easier than trying to set it with a micrometer. For sizes you use frequently a precision ground ring gauge is nice also. Used to run an internal grinder grinding hard coat plasma with a diamond wheel to a tolerance of +or - .0002 using a digital dial bore gauge calibrated down to .oooo5:confused: Set it with a precision ring gauge registered with US Bureau of Standards.

  8. Nick, you do absolutely beautiful work! A supreme craftsman at work. There aren’t many left around like you anymore!

Not much more to report back yet. Been swamped in my shop trying to finish a bunch of projects. I did want to check oil pump clearance so I did some mockup to see what I was up against.
    20180123_075026.jpg
With the rear cap strap becoming taller I knew things would be a tight fit.

It looks like I can remove a very small amount of material from this pump casting but will need to use 12 point nuts for the extra room. I may look at a few other oil pumps and use what fits best. I plan to modify the inside of the pump either way. Still waiting on my cam fixture from BHJ and still need to line hone the block. All for now.

Good question, in this case no. Before I started machining the cap I zeroed off of the oil pump pad on the cap and machined down the exact thickness of the strap. This will keep that height in check.

They are at different heights. The register in the block is about .200 lower.

My BHJ Cam Tru Fixture showed up today. This fixture will put the cam tunnel in the correct location and I can also enlarge the tunnel in the process. Looks like I better get things moving.

This is starting to look like the most expensive/technically advanced 283 that was ever built. Keep it up, and keep posting PLEASE; you're doing what dreams are made of. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

  17. Love the attention to detail. I have a 283 sitting under my work bench waiting for some attention. Some day it'll replace the crate 350 in my 33 Chevy.

Well, I got my way! I've been on a few guys at Trickflow about offering the DHC Head bare as they didn't have plans to do that. I just don't plan to use any of that gear since I'm going a different level with it. Today I ordered the first one to use as a R&D piece, went with the earlier model without accessory holes. I plan to do a CNC Program for these because I know of a few racing associations that allow them. I'll share the progress of that here as I progress.

Found a little write up on the head (found some typos reading it and keep scrolling down - much more info and pics further down) and posted it below. I think this will fill my need well. Looks the part and will be capable of what I need to make power. Casting cutaways in the link show a good amount of material to work with!

Well the R&D piece showed up a few days ago. Here are some pictures of the no accessory hole version.

I decided to use some similar valves to what they would probably supply the heads with to do a baseline flow test (2.02/1.60). Intake valves are not back cut and flow test is using a 4.030 bore and a #1204 radius plate at the entry.

So overall on the intake side they flow pretty close. I will do the exhaust side at a later date. Here is what is advertised for flow info.

I started playing with porting the intake side. Right now I'm trying to figure out what the port likes. This design is proving to be tricky as it hasn't responded in the fashion I had hoped but will keep digging until I can figure it out. Right now I'm questioning the chamber (haven't altered it yet) shrouding the valve or the short side radius shape as I've changed it many times so far.

Work on the radius in the floor just before the bowl?

Yes. It has a rather tall height or ski jump to it. They added a bunch of material there on the intake and exhaust sides compared to the factory casting. I've lowered it .200 and widened the short side width to control the air speed. It sounds better on my flowbench and also doesn't go into a choke condition where the port backs up like the baseline test. I picked up some airflow but nowhere near where I want to be for my effort. It will take time to figure it out, at least I have 3 other ports to play with.

What radius are you using in the corners of the ports?
Isn't there flow to be found there?

  24. Hole-ee crap! I thought I was doing something with my little stock block 301 with Oliver small journal steel rods, ancient Forgetrue 11to ones and stock steel crank with WAM balancing and machine work. HA! I'll just slink over here in the shadows and learn sumthun.
Will you run it at the little 1/8 mile at P.J. this summer? Maybe the new 1/4 mile track at Onawa if it EVER opens?

I'm pulling my signs from PJ this year. Onawa has my business moving forward. Been a track sponsor for over 12 years down at PJ. Car isn't started yet so I figured I'd start on a few bullets for it in the meantime.

No flow really to be found, happier airspeed profile however. 3/8 radius usually but haven't measured it yet.

How'd I miss this thread. I love the technical aspect and your rationale explaining it in lay mans terms. The pictures / videos alone are worth a 1,000 words to me. Love it, can't wait for updates and hearing the little mouse scream.
