Hot Rods It’s raining F-100’s. 1955 street mosheen

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chris, Mar 6, 2018.

  1. I spotted this 55 while taking a short cut a couple months back. Talked to the people at the house, looked it over, made an offer and they called me yesterday and said come and get it. It really is the last thing I need but it’s a really decent truck so hooked up my trailer and headed over.

It’s been parked at least 20 years. Has a 302, automatic and 1957 9” rear end. Tail gate has been smoothed and bed rails caped. It’s dark metallic green with a super bitchin diamond fluff interior. The engine turns by hand, I’ll get some oil in the cylinders and let it soak for a while. In the meantime I’ll get the garbage cleaned out of the back. I did put a hot battery in it and the dash lights work...so that’s a good sign.

It’s a custom cab, has all the trim and even had a factory radio. The radio is gone but the speaker is still in the roof. It needs a lot of work but I think will make a really cool lil Effie.

Chris...'55 is the 'way coolest F100, they're 'bonaroo' and 'George'! (See how long they've been 'cool'??? Tell by the slang...)

Mine was stolen and vandalized before I got it. But I bought it in March, 1972. Seems like yesterday, it's been my daily driver since '75. Turned 13.20 at Fremont digs ('Baylands') in '83, street tires and mufflers.
Guys ask how fast it is, I say "one foot per second..." SBC, 350 T.H., '60 pickup 9" rear.
    Still (again) in primer... :p

Blast it apart, clean and tidy. Get some shield taillights. (or '50 Mercs!)

Where do you put 'em all Chris? Nice score

  7. That's my current issue. I have a couple 59 pickups I need to sell and this one does not have a spot. I want to find a good place just to stash it for now. I like it and want to keep it, at least for now. This was a spur of the moment purchase (aren't they all?), I really had no intention on dragging another truck home with my two 59 pickup projects.

The good news is I sold a 60 F-100 the DAY BEFORE, so maybe it was meant to be LOL LOL LOL

Mike, unless that's some of that new math, I think that's 100 feet per second.

    Looks like a good start.
Ain't it funny how old pick ups get attention for a while then fall from grace and get beat up or just sit and deteriorate. My '55 was all fixed up, painted, driven a while then parked in a yard and left to the elements. I just cleaned it up, made it reliable and it's served me well for over 15 years. Good score.

  11. Congrats, Chris. those F-100s are just the right size for me. The one thing that bugs me about them is the front wheel not being centered in the wheelwell opening but that's a fairly easy fix. If I was closer I'd be wanting your 59 stuff. I miss not having a pickup.
This is my old 53 from 25 years ago.....301 chevy/ 350 turbo/66 lincoln rear axle. I subframed mine with a 70s Z-28 subframe as was the craze back then.
Yours appears to be a nice, solid truck.

  13. What happens when you've bought and sold all the old cars in the PNW? Will you start again, or move? :D

  15. I loved that truck you had and always wished I had the cash. This truck still has the clutch pedal in it, so maybe the hood was off another one? But I agree, at one time this truck was really fixed up

  16. Being the owner of an F-100 myself I know how much work goes into getting one back on the road. Great find.

  20. I traded a $50 horse for a 55 Pk in 1966. Mine had the original 272 swapped for a slant 6 and three speed from a dodge. Then that was swapped for a Y block with a teapot carb and three speed from a passenger car. Had the dodge pedals hung from the dash and the dodge shifter. Shuddered very badly when you tried to take off easy. It had stopped running before I traded for it. and they had installed new points plugs coil ect. I found that the wire inside the dist that connects to the points was grounded. I fixed that and it fired right up. The engine was junk . Really solid body. I sold it for $65 and that guy installed a nailhead buick engine and transmission from a 57 in it. Made a nice truck.

Good looking truck, are the cab corners and the roof edges solid?

  23. The cab corners have a few bubbles, roof is great. They don't rust over here like they do over there!

  25. I cleaned the bed out of the 53...this is all the metal that was in it. I took the garbage to the dump (less metal)...740 lbs!!! I had no idea most of that (including two transmissions) was under all that junk

  26. That truck is killer! The diamond fluff interior reminds me of a lima bean version of the Munster Koach. What transmission is in it? C4?

  28. Those transmissions are desirable. one is a overdrive. and the other is the later full syncro 3 speed. notice that the later trans has 8 holes to mount it to a bellhousing. by using the smaller pattern that trans will bolt to a early bellhousing.

Wolf...That '8 bolt tranny' has some great points: the larger pattern bolts to the large Ford bell, (some of which have BOTH patterns just as the trannys do; supposed to be 'either-or'. I pulled out a 390 that had this tranny, and some ditz had used all 8 bolts to attach the two. ??
I use these trannys, as they are strong...AND, when I see a floorshift linkage conversion I laugh.
Remove the top plate, also the inside forks. A Jeep 3 speed tower with cane shifter then bolts on. ($75 at most jeep dismantlers) I LOVE my Real Floor Shift! (My '54 Ford Coupe has this setup behind a 406)
My '47 Ford sedan also has one, and I have another for my '50 F-1. Nice thing is the tranny doesn't care what engine it's behind...my 455 Olds has one bolted to the 'inside holes' of its B-O-P bell housing.
    Use it wisely, Chris!
