so I'm trying to fit lower radiator hose on my 32 ford. I read 55-57 chevy lower hose would fit. It seems it should but the hose isn't large enough to fir over the water pump. It's an aftermarket aluminum pump. Do these pumps require a special hose? Any help is appreciated.
They shouldn't but unless the same shop set the cars up in assembly fashion as Magoo did with the roadsters back when I'd think that not that many will be exactly the same. Some guys will say to get a length of flexible heater duct or that foil tube that they sell for heat risers and bend it to the exact shape and then take it to the parts house and start comparing. Or cheaper would be digging some old pieces of hose out of the trash and cutting and fitting an taping it together to have a real close resemblance to what you need and that doesn't cost anything except the tape. Figure that you are going after a hose that has the right section with the right bends somewhere in it so you can cut it to fit.
Yes, it is a special hose. Call AZ and tell the guy that you need the special hose that for an aluminum water pump for a sbc in a 32 Ford.... He can look that right up for you. Ok.... There may be a hose out there that will work, but you gonna have to do a little bit of work for it. Measure the diameter of the hose nipples on the water pump and radiator. Take a coat hanger, old brake line... Anything that will hold it's shape and form it to follow the route you need the hose to follow. Go to your auto supply with bent wire and tape measure. Tell them what you need and they will be happy to let you dig through their hoses to find something. Now... You may find a hose that is longer with more bends, but find one with a section of hose that will work. Done it a million times. Last one was on a 41 Chevy/LS swap. Upper hose I ended up with fit like it was made for it, even curved around the throttle body! It was a hose for a Mercury Villager... Lol Sent from my Moto G Play using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I used a zips riser on the sbc in my Deuce and I believe I used the same lower hose that was already in use when I installed the zips. Gates hose # 20225 and it fit like it was designed for a sbc in a Deuce.HRP
What he said. Flip it around and try it both ways and I think you will find it will work . Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I always use the bottom hose for a 65 mustang V8 for a SBC and 32 aftermarket radiator. I don't know what it looks like when it's used on the mustang but it fits the SBC in the 32.
I've used lower and upper hoses for tri-five chevys on my last two cars. Napa 7042 lower and O'reillys 21026 upper.
If you have a Flowcooler water pump the inlet is a good bit smaller than the regular pump inlet but it's the same as the outlet of a Walker rad. I have 2 with this setup and a Gates 2005 hose fits like it was made for the job. A Gates 2005 is a European application for a vehicle (can't remember what) that probably wasn't available in the US (a Citroen of the 90's I think, horrible things!). Chris
What greybeard and Mr48chev said. Two measurements and a mock up and your good to go. I have used aluminum tubing for the mock up. Make sure you keep the hose part # for future replacement.
I keep a couple of pieces of VW flexible aluminum exhaust duct around to get a exact length & shape for upper & lower radiator hoses, they will hold their shape and are a great tool when looking for the right shape & size hose. HRP
I used a 1978 malibu or Monte Carlo lower hose and some minor trimming it fit perfectly. Ten years and counting
If the lower hose does not come with a internal spring, it is a good idea to try and find a spring that will fit. They help to prevent the hose from collapsing.
