Technical Older style valve covers on a 5.0?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Animal, Feb 12, 2018.

  1. I have a stock '90 5.0 Ford and am having trouble finding a definitive answer to a question I have about valve covers...If I use an old Performer intake and a Holley 600, what valve covers will actually fit the stock 5.0? Do I need to use the EFI era covers, or can I use old Weiand, Offy, or Edelbrock covers, or do I need "tall" pre-86 covers? I searched the board, and couldn't find any definitive info, so here I am, admitting my ignorance about the subject. I would greatly appreciate any assistance from someone who actually knows the answer to my query. ;)

As long as your not using roller rockers, any factory stock 289/302/351W covers will fit.... I think....

You should be ok with almost any 289/302 valve cover. The efi covers are pretty low profile so clearance also should not be a problem

Any 289/302/5.0/351W/5.8 cover will fit. Nothing changed except oil fill holes and PCV applications. Bolt patterns are all the same. Only thing that messes it up is PCV and oil fill holes.

  5. Thanks, guys! I looked at some different ones here in the garage, and thought the old ones would work, but wanted to make sure I didn't suffer from brain fade.

Just went thru this on the 5.0L in the '31. Put a set of MT's on it and the rockers just touch the baffle bosses on the inside. Put an extra thick .330 gasket on it and all is good.

I'm running old style low-profile covers on 1993 heads with roller rockers. Had to trim the oil baffle sheet metal inside one, but otherwise they fit fine.

Yep, as already said any will fit, fill hole might move around.
I like the looks of the tall ones, but my intake dictates that I have to use the shortest ones I can find, no clearance issues with my rockers and my Chinese so-cal finned aluminum ones

I put spacers under my old original covers to clear roller rockers. Also cut a hole in one and added a stand for a fill/breather.

Find an old LincolnContinental with a 302- some have really cool finned aluminum covers from the factory. Early 70's maybe? Nothing like the aftermarket stuff.

I put 289 valve covers on a mid 80s 351-W and the rocker arms hit the baffles, the motor now has 302 marine valve covers and they do not have anything stamped on them so stickers can be applied.
