  12. A couple I used to have (I remember paying $35 each - new! - in 1970 for the 8s on the rear of my '54 Pontiac):

Those 8s ended up on the front of my '52 coupe next - 10s in the back:

Lions Dragstrip 1964 Gas Coupe and Sedan Only, all day event.

    Hello,

In going back through my files, I came across this 1964 photo clip of the Silver Dollar Willys pick up truck in the pits at Lions Dragstrip. The event was a Gas Coupe and Sedan Only event that had the top racers in So Cal racing all day. No FEDs, no roadsters, no altereds, just Gas Coupes and Sedans. It was a one of a kind event that was well attended and the races were outstanding.

Chrome wheels are very prominent on this radical truck. Yes, they are hot rods that are legal to run on the street and at the drags. But, in 1962, the class saw changes that pushed the limits. By the mid 60s, the envelope was being pushed that these gas coupes and sedans (trucks) were fully street legal. It was a thin line as they were more race cars than street cars.

The days of the local street cruiser/hot rod racing at the drags was slowly becoming more professional with full sponsorships and payout money. The Gas Coupes and Sedans were becoming more full on race cars plastered with names, cam grinders, major sponsors, mini sponsors and speed parts. They were the start of the evolution where the individual race cars became sponsor cars. That was/is too bad… money talks...etc.

No more "pop the hubcaps and go racing." Or the backyard builders putting an SBC into a grassy field find, old coupe or 40 Ford coupe for a run at the drags… gone are those fun, old days.

  18. Bought my parent's daily driver yellow and white 55 olds after high school. Went directly to Les Schwab Tire Center for these chrome reverse wheels but I only had enough money for two. I put both of 'em on one side for the photo and later bought another pair to match. 55olds.jpg

  22. Chromed wheels with reversed rims have looked great since the day they were born! And, IMO, they need some caps, such as Baby Moons, to look finished. And to keep from getting busted for indecent driving (nuts exposed). I see several pics of cars with Spiders instead of caps. Those were popular for about two weeks in the early 60's, but it appears they're making a comeback. I thought they were the tits back then; now, not so much. You can't go wrong with Baby Moons.

My opinion, but that's way too much whitewall.
