Projects 1952 chevy Business coupe

So here it is Ive had car for awhile doing small stuff here and there. Fist thing was to put some seat in it to make it a little more comfortable when driving. Did this on a budget of 30 bucks. Not staying this way. just for now. Next was to rebuild carb as car was starting to run funny/ idle . Dropped tank put new stainless line in. one full piece. let met tell you that was a pain. Next new fuel pump, plugs,wires and put a electronic ignition/ points.

 

Also frenched in head lights, used lead for a filler. first time using lead and it was pretty fun. A lot of filing But went good with beer.

 

Also fixed belt line rust by rear window. I took a extra door that was shoot and used that piece for repair.

 

Looks good , lead and beer sounds great...

 

I like the seat covering . I have to wonder how many old 1950's Chevy cars are left.

Thanks for the words. So next thing is making a alternator bracket to change out the generator. I'm planning on using a alternator in a generator cover to keep it classy. I cut some flat stock, measured alternator, drilled holes, then tacked welded, test fit. Had to go and round the corners were alternator bolts on the get more adjustability. paint and done. I figured id do this sense I rewired for 12v and put battery in trunk.

So now the fun begins. I'm going to put 55 chevy lights in. Thought about it and looked at it for week or so. So lets do it. This is were we stand. I drilled holes through the bezels. Went to weld bolts to bezels so I can French the light and mount them from the trunk surprise it pot metal, great. Well did some research and found about this stuff called muggy weld. worked like a charm. stuff is great. So now we have solved how to tack bolts in place. Next, well I bent some sheet metal for the bezels then taped them in place. next I measured center of quarter panels and marked it on some angle iron. then I centered tail lights by marking the sheet metal I bent on the bezels. Then used self tapping screws to secure them to the angle iron. Next I made sure they were level, straight and I took some round rod to tack in place. Then cut some 55 tail light surrounds. Now tomorrow I will swing by a friends and blast the metal and tack it in. place then roll out the rest of the metal.

 

I have never seen this tail light treatment. It does help when all the details are shown.

So got a little bit done today not much but something. I started off by marking panel then cutting a small strip to start with so that way the tacked rod would stay in place. Then I taped round rod to panel and soon to be tail light in place before tack welding in place. Then I tacked welded and beat some of it to shape. This is were she lays. We will start lower half next. Don't mind the sharpie line. that's to help me make sense of the compound curve tortes the trunk.

 

I got the other tail light quart panel tacked in yesterday. Today I will start forming the bottom half of the lights. First I will start by making a template and then maybe make it to a piece of wood so I get the curve right. But so Far I'm happy with the way its coming out.

Got a little done today not much but A start to the low half of the tail light treatment. I used 5" pipe to bend the curve then hand formed the rest. its pretty close to getting tacked in. just have to mess with it a little more. also picked up a 53 ford bumper that I may use.

Was at today for a few. I got the passenger side 50% done, I'm happy with the way its coming along. Had to put the lens in to make sure it what I'm after. On the bottom section of the panel under light I made it lean in towards the front of the car on the bottom half. Looked better because when it was level it didn't look right

 

Well I got after it the last few days and this is where I'm at. This is my first real body modification and I'm pretty happy with the way its going. I made tabs so the light slips in from behind so lights bulbs and lenses can be changed out if needed. I took the light bucket and trimmed it down to get the rite fitment for slipping it in from behind.

 

Ive been out of the H.A.M.B. loop for a while and just stumbled on this thread. You’re doing great work. The taillights look killer.

This thread shows the patience one needs to really build a "Classic" custom car. I hope the plans I have for my '52 2-door Styleline Deluxe will be half the quality of your Chevy . Keep up the good work.

 

Thanks for the kind words. Yah slow goes the buffalo, it would be nice to finish over night but getting it right is a slow pace at least for me anyway. I don't like doing things twice. A lot of times I will get it close to what I'm going for and look at it for a couple of days and then move forward with a plan not rushing it. Seems to work for me best this way.

 

Getting close to rapping these tail lights up. got them muggy welded up and wired. The left light gave me hell I wanted to kick that thing a few times. Only took 3 days to get it right. But I'm happy with how it turned out. Hopefully tomorrow I will have it back on the road. Cant wait to cruise it around again. Here is a couple of pictures of the progress.

 

Finally got the tail lights done. They came out to my liking. I hand to fight the left side to get it right. Though reveres compound curves were a pain and get the light straight. Next I need to do the under side of the lights were the splash pan goes and figure out the bump. Might use stock or try and find something that curves around the light. Any suggestions would be great. I also have a spare 1953 for custimline bumper but it will need a lot of cutting to make right.
