They were bent out out 16 ga. with two 90 degree bends, about an inch or so apart, I made the "boards" almost as wide as rear fender and made the outside edge parallel with body, it turned out well, To start with I wanted them wider, but after holding them up, I liked the subtle look, so I "tucked" them under body, I got pieces from VW bug for fender extensions.
then trimmed the part under the body off.
On all of my modifications on projects, I like to make people wonder, "what looks different here ? " Just seems like more fun. (i.e. sectioning a car/truck, and leaving door handle and trim..)

I'm not real bright are you saying the running boards are narrower where they meet the front fender since the front fender is wider than the rear fender?Did you square off the bottom of the rockers?

Sectioning a 59 rambler American 2 door sedan ,keeping all the trim and door handles, is on my short list of cars to build.

after you bend the pieces, hold them up until it looks "right" >> The eye does not lie, the rear, and front fenders stick out further than running boards.

I did not modify rockers at all, I DID make sure drain holes were open to the underneath.
You will KNOW when it looks good,
IF it looks good, nail it, just get piece wide enuff you can move in or out, before you weld.

  6. It's chopped about the combined width of the door and rear window pillars as a reference .

note how much space between top of running board and bottom of door on Moose's depiction?
And how much space there is between top of running board and bottom of my door on my car?

I think that space NEEDS to be there.... IMO

I did that VERY THING and I ruined a perfect hood, and got a very bad look. IMO :(

I think it had to do with location of headlites, just didn't look correct to me and some of my peers.

Also the hood tilts to the front, would have taken prayer to continue with a look I didn't like.

It just keeps getting better and better Moose, you're the man.

verde742 I'm not a fan of the lengthened hood look on these either.

Can somebody throw some black flames on my ride? I'd like them to go to the rear fender and on the roof if possible. I included two pics to choose from. Thanks in advance!

  16. The aspect ratio of the pictures that you posted is not correct so I changed it to about how it should look...

Thanks Moose! I just noticed the aspect ratio was off and came back to replace the pics. This has helped a bunch, thanks again!

flames aren't BLACK, flames is red, yellow, white and blue

  19. Hey verde742....Been some good looking hot rods and customs painted with black flames over the years. Like anything else in the custom car world it's a matter of personal taste and doing something different and innovative and sometimes pushing the envelope of what is considered to be NORMAL

Moose, I love the black flames and you are correct, normal isn't normal anymore.

  25. @verde742... I always appreciate your complements and input. I'm just having a good time with some good old back and forth banter just like we would if we were sitting around the shop throwing back a couple of beers...That's what keeps life interesting!!! ;)
