Poster has no idea what it is. Says it might be a olds, buick or a Chevy. What do you think. Sent from my SM-J727T1 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The engine number will identify it as well as casting numbers Flywheels: Oldsmobile 1949 - 1953 (303) - 145 teeth Oldsmobile 1954 - 1960 (324 + 371) - 176 teeth Oldsmobile 1961 - 1964 (late 371 + 394) - 176 teeth
303/324/371 should have a tab just under the head on the DS (maybe the PS) near the center that you can clean off and get the number of the block. The head does not have to be off. There should be a number on the heads right by the center exhaust port that will help also. Split center exhaust port would indicate 64+ and not a 303/324
look like 9 fin cal custom, kinda rare for the sbc, they are out there but not anywhere near as common as the 7 fin version and then them being the odd Olds version....
No I haven't purchased this yet. The front mounts did catch my attention, why do they look so different. Just for curiosity I looked up "9 fin valve cover" and got "corvette valve cover" Sent from my SM-J727T1 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The valve covers are center bolt type, which dates the motor to no newer than '58. Olds went to 'conventional' valve covers with perimeter bolts in '59. The motor mounts appear to be Hurst engine swap mounts. Those two items are worth the asking price by themselves.....
Olds- might be a 394, but like Squirrel said, there's at least $200 in the valve covers and mount alone.
Yep those are either Hurts mounts or a darned good copy. I wish I owned them. Not that concerned about the rocker covers, I got a 394 with perimeter bolts but the mounts are gold in my opinion.
The confusion over the online search of "9 fin valve covers", as far as Corvette valve covers go, this was a 1956 year only deal with the 9 fins, they have been 7 fin since. The Corvette 9 fin are $$$$$, while the 7 fin are $. As far as the engine you posted about, I too was going to say early Olds V-8 also, but the water pump threw me, not being too up on early Olds V-8's. If the engine is't locked up, and you have the room, and $, then buy it to flip. Are there other parts, such as in that milk crate, for the engine? Even the milk crate is worth $ to me. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
So these mount will give me the choice to mount any engine on any frame?. I looked them up and learned they absorb torque well. Sent from my SM-J727T1 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Not exactly. The mounts are specific to Oldsmobile in this case, although Hurst made similar mounts for most popular V8's in that era. The thing they have in common is that most/all were designed to use '32 thru '48 passenger car motor mount 'biscuits' (insulators). And, as I recall, the spacing of the mounts side to side is that of early Ford. That configuration is generally fairly easy to adapt to a variety of chassis. Ray
It was sold the same day i posted this on here, so maybe next time I'll buy it then ask haha haha. Sent from my SM-J727T1 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
