I wanted my vintage (before all the repops) single four Surfer scoop to accept two 6x3 air filters and also sit a certain way out of the hood of my 41 Chevy p/u. This thing was pretty ugly when I scored it at a swap meet so I gave it the ol Flying Tigers shark teeth and a satin black paint job 10 yrs ago. I never did this before but figured I could cut the bottom out and mold a new one so I could actually use this scoop since all my cars have 2x4s. I winged it along, figuring it out as I went but the worst part was saving that paint job. We all like photos so I'll let them just speak for what I did and don't be afraid to try something new.
One of my favorite scoops! Always wanted one myself. Great job on the modification Phil! Really diggin how it fits through the hood. Tony
Thanks, I seem to be more tired but trying to keep busy, lung test was further down and slight decrease in heart pump function also, doubled the dose on my depression meds but I'm still here.
I guess that's a good and a bad prognosis. About the only thing you can do is to remain focused on the positives and keep doing things you Love. Being surrounded by family and great people is a definite Blessing. Stay Strong Phil.
Thanks, somewhere during the process I made an error and the first fitting it was sticking 3/4 inch to high out of the hood. It took about 10 seconds to decide to cut the bottom back out and drop it that 3/4 inch...lol
I revisited this scoop and cut the front out and redid it since the original design I made wasn't to user friendly for removing, now it works great.
Nice! I like the way the scoop's edge and the hole in the hood are parallel, when looking from above, as well as looking from the side.
It looks like it belongs. Style wise, it looks like the granddaddy of all shakers before there were shakers. I'd be interested in the details of what's going on instead of wingnuts and filters. (?)
Damn motor is solid mounted so it doesn't even shake Ha Ha Ha The silver metal plate sets over the carbs, put air cleaners and lids on top of plate and secure it with the carb stud wingnuts. The scoop sits over the top of the silver plate, I had fiberglassed a metal plate with bolts welded in like studs into the bottom of the scoop, then you put nuts and washers on those studs that protrude through the silver plate under the air cleaners. So the silver plate gets sandwiched between carbs and air cleaners, then the scoop goes over the top sandwhiching the air cleaners between scoop and silver plate.
This outer ring is what I welded the studs in and fiberglassed that into the scoop itself, there's 8 mounting points but I only circled 6 in my haste there.
Looking great! The one I have is sitting where I left it two engines ago. This thread makes me want to resurrect and finish it. Could you tell me your filter element part #? Thanks!
Next time I take it apart I'll get the number, I've got 6 different elements for different scoops so I'm not sure which ones are inside there.
Looks great! Where did you get those bases? They come on all kinds of aftermarket scoops but I can’t find one sold separately.
Deja vu…Man o man, I’m losing it. I’m sorry, just looked back and damn if you didn’t. I got distracted and set that project on the shelf. So now I’m back into it. PS: I’m going to order it right now. I promise!
I'm hanging, several months back I bought an exercise bike and do about 3.5 miles at 13.5 mph average each night. I didn't lose any weight like I bought it for but it did help my lung function, I actually had a normal reading on the last lung capacity test, first one ever since I got this terrible disease. May 8th I have my annual echocardiogram, hopefully the heart function hasn't declined, last pacemaker reading was decent showing a great reduction in PVC's thanks to a new medication. So all in all I'm feeling pretty good considering
