Found in a bag of bolts marked "Timing Cover" Stamped metal, .038 thick, looks like heat treated or spring steel. The "U" part looks like it would straddle a 3/8" bolt? Any thoughts?

The photo isn't the greatest but methinks it's a retainer clip.
I will check my manual for you after breakfast.

Looks like a bent clutch fork retaining clip. Didn't come from any Chev or GMC timing cover ...

Thanks for all the input. You never know what you might get with a basket motor. If you guys don't know what it is nobody will. Def. not a clutch fork part...

The fun thing about the stovebolt timing cover is that the two bottom capscrews are accessed from inside the crankcase (the pan has to be removed to get to them). That may very well be some type of locking clip.

the original locking clip is a flat piece of metal with two holes in it, it looks nothing like the mystery part.

Thanx Jim. I've seen mine after cursing my pan off. I thought that might be a trailer park replacement for a lost one but it's a stretch since I can't see how it would work in that capacity.

I have no trouble believing that it's a stray part from something else. Happens all the time.

It's not that clip. I have the one with two holes for the timing cover. But thanks for thinking about it.
