10/24 AND 3/16-24 are the same size.

Macs sell a set of screws to suit but they do not have the exact same head as the originals. I'm not near mine at the minute so cannot tell you what thread they are. On one of my cowls the 2 screws either end of the dash are brass and the ones along the top are steel. I'm talking closed car here.

Mine is a rusty 5WD and I would like to clean up the D nut threads without"screwing" them up. So I was hoping that someone could tell me the exact original thread size. thanks

  6. 12-24. Run a tap in them and a tiny drop of oil.

  9. Yep. 12-24. The replacement d-nuts are easy to install, though.

Could someone please explain what the 12-24 means?
I'm guessing the 24 means 24 threads per inch, but what about the 12 preceding it, is it referring to 12 gauge? Can't be as it is very small if it is.

  12. You know screw sizes? 10-24. 10-32. Henry used 12-24. Under a 1/4.

"12" refers to the diameter in 64ths of an inch. 12/64" = 3/16", so a number 12-24 screw is the same as a 3/16-24. Just a different system. #8-32 is actually a 1/8-32, etc.

    Thanks,
Not a system that we use here, as far as I know.
We would just call it a 3/16 or 1/8 or 5/32 etc etc.
Down here we are now mainly metric, - since 1974.
