In doing the initial work I found that the 3 stage turbine in my sprayer was not giving me the atomization that I thought it should so, I sourced a 6 stage turbine and will wait till it arrives to spray color.
It will work much better

So, that means no color spraying for a few weeks however, it's not like I have nothing to do in the meantime. ;)

The 6 stage turbine motor I am buying is an Ametek 122097-00, and is a huge amount cheaper than buying a 5 stage HVLP turbine unit from the likes of Fuji, or Apollo who are asking around $1400 USD or more for one.

The turbine motor will cost me less than $300.
    http://www.centralvacuummotor.com/Ametek/122097-00(High&Low).pdf

    122097-00.jpg

Notice that it has the hose attachment fitting already there as it is a turbine unit designed for HVLP spraying of paint, rather than some of the other motors that are repurposed vacuum cleaner turbines.

In doing this I know I will get proper atomization from my paint gun so that I can flow a nice smooth finish.

Meanwhile I can sand everything down to a super fine finish ;) :D
    Larry.

"a few WEEKS"? If my hair was long enough I'd pull it out. But, it'll be worth it.

Don't go too fine on the sanding, 400-600 grit is probably the lowest I would use. The reason is the paint needs some fine "imperfections" (in the trade known as tooth) in the substrate to grab onto or you MAY have problems down the road with paint adhesion.

Yes, 400 is my stopping point.

400 is good, from 'someone who did a 600 finish and the paint adhered like a slippery plastic film'... LOL
400 is the ticket. (excited you're painting it Washington Blue...) also GLAD you're painting the frame and underpinnings the color of the car. Like it should be.

The pics of all the components laid out reminds me of my nephew's reaction when he came to my shop and saw my steel '27 roadster laid out like that. (all in primer, frame alongside, firewall, doors, deck lid all laid out)
He said, "Uncle Mike! That looks just like when I build a model car!"
I had seen his work with model cars...meticulous, (hell, he had 20/15 vision!!!) but set up just like this.
Every time I walk into my shop, I see a 'big model diorama'!
Darn you, Teddy. You've planted a seed.

So much for minimal prep for the pickup bed :D
I spent pretty much all day working on it and still not done.
    Getting closer though.

The photographer that took this photo said to me it looks like someone took a ballpein SP hammer to the PU bed. I said yeah me to get it that good. He said don't worry I'll put a shadow on it.

    Well the saga continues.
After many hours and days I 'm done with the body.
Blocked out with 400 and I've fussed and detailed it about as much as I can.

So it's going to sit off to the side waiting for paint while I finish preparing the other parts.

The pickup bed is very close to being ready as well.

Finished the prep on the pickup bed and the doors.
    Prepped the dash and tailgate.
Also got the grille shell prepped.

All I have left is to roll the frame out and sand the epoxy primer on the outer rails down to 320.

It's been a long road since I started body prep :D

Then once I get the new turbine it will be paint time

I had almost overlooked the headlights and tailights, so this morning I prepped and shot them with epoxy primer.

Had a little extra primer in the gun so I shot a second coat on the side panels that go below the box.

Wasn't going to mention it but what the heck :D
I had one of those aw crap moments during the prep of the headlights.
I was cleaning to paint one of my brand new headlights and it flew from my hands being slippery from the wax and grease remover... bang on the concrete floor and a nice round dent

So, I bumped it out and metal worked it and no more dent, just like new....after a couple of hours :D
    Lesson learned, be careful :D

That's it, I'm ready for color.
Have to pick up a few more body shop supplies and wait till my new turbine gets here. In the meantime I'm pretty sure I can find something to do.

Like remove the nice deep aluminum pan the transmission builder put on my C4.
As it turns out it's a beautiful pan but hangs down too low .

So, I'm going to cut some out of the middle and Tig weld it back together into a stock depth for ground clearance.

The aluminum transmission pans are nice in that they seal better on the gasket than the stamped steel ones.

There's always something to do :D

Great build I have really enjoyed seeing your progress. Looking forward to seeing some colour on it. Where are you getting your Washington Blue from? That's is the colour I'm planning for my roadster and I'm looking for a local source as I'm just south of you in Calgary

Wow Larry, looks AMAZING! Sorry I haven't been around much lately but just got caught up. Truck is looking fantastic!

  24. Carlson's has a location in Calgary close to what I think they are now calling Deerfoot Mall. They are about 2 blocks North of the mall.

Forgot to mention that I just had them reference Ford code M1747 and they had a formula for Uno.

They can't mix that color in some other paint types or products.

Thanks K13 I never new there was a body shop paint supply store up there. Great for me because I just work a few blocks from that dearfoot mall location. And now I have the code needed for Washington blue from a local supplier

Well today my new 6 stage Ametek HVLP turbine motor showed up.
So I spent the day putting it into the sprayer.

The 6 stage assembly is taller than the 3 stage so it required some modifications in order to make it work :D

The 3 stage turbine took it's motor cooling air in through the same filter as the painting air supply (at the rear of the cabinet) even though it is isolated from that supply and exhausts motor cooling air out the louvers on the sides.

Being taller the 6 stage motor ended up coming through the top of the cabinet :D

So to ensure it had filtered air and to keep debris out of the motor's cooling fan I picked up a small air filter and made a lid for it.

I also had to replace the switch as the original switch contained an 8 amp breaker and it was tripping because the new motor draws more amps.

So a new switch with a higher rating and no breaker solved that.

    I'm impressed.
This thing is really going to spray paint
    It puts out :)
    Larry.

Sweet! Looks great! No chrome air cleaner? No K&N filter? I guess I'll let it pass. Seriously though. You're gonna be the envy of us all with that setup!
