I was born in August of '62, so maybe that's why I'm so drawn to this event. It's gonna be another fun one, see you soon.
That '51 Chev Deluxe cab is a scarce truck. Korean war metal controls caused most '51 & '52 trucks to be devoid of any brightwork.
great pics, 62 was a great year for drag racing. I have a 62 vette that was a race car back in 1965, it didn't stay on the streets very long.
How long before we see a few "MoKan Dragway" trucks? Cool idea! Should have said earlier, that first few pics of the wheels up dragster was very similar to my first licensing runs in my little, 120" W.B. FED; 10" sticky tires, 5500 stall converter, SBC in the late 70's, and it would just climb the ring gear. Wheely bars made all the difference. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
I don't know when I first attended the drags at MOKAN. It was either labor day '62 or memorial day '63. It was even better than the pictures show. David Hightower was a good photographer and a world class pinstriper. He has a bunch of photos that were hanging at the Hamb drags one year. Also a top notch flagman. There is someone on the Hamb that has a bunch of photos but I can't remember who it is. Would love to have a copy. The numbers and stripes you see in one of the pictures were in the right lane and used for handicap starts. We ran in stock eliminator for a while and you had to win your class to go on. Good times. Pete
I was drag racing in 1962. It was the golden age. It is vitally important that those days are preserved, and not forgotten. Any event that is in that spirit is a wonderful tribute, and a reminder of the people, places and cars that formed our hobby. Good on all that make the HAMB drags happen!
I was there in '62 and that 32 sure looks like McCracken's old car. Rode to high school in his deuce a bunch of days back then. I'll never forget the day that deuce waxed a '61 tri-powered Pontiac Ventura from the light. That "poor little rich boy" sure was upset. Great memories !!
