Ok, feel free to flame me. I'm an old guy, always a car guy so I think that means I should know but I've never been a Ford guy. Why is the Y block the only V8 I EVER remember having an exhaust crossover pipe?

Because it IS the only V8 with a crossover pipe? Good question though. What was the purpose?

They sound great with dual exhaust. The crossover was restrictive and had other issues.

  10. The exhaust crossover was used because there isn't enough room between the engine and steering sector and clutch-shift linkage to use a rear dump exhaust manifold. Its a cost saving solution to solving a design problem. With the fan blowing the heat from that pipe into the air cleaner you didn't have to worry about the carb icing.

  14. Not in front on top of the engine. That Y block design forced the lions share of the drivers side exhaust to have to go completely through the passenger side manifold before exiting at the rear. A small portion would pass through the center port of the intake. Never seen a crossover Y block that had carb icing problems. There are center dump F600 manifolds that can de used to make the exhaust more efficient.

52-53 crossed over low across the front to the passenger. The drivers side manifold did not exhaust out the back, only thru the passenger side.
