Nothing sounded as good as a Novi. I cheered long and loud for the John Zink cars and anything that the Unser's or Rick Mears drove.

I am suffering withdrawal pains because I can't be there this year. My first year was 1958 as a wide eyed 10 year old. I took family there last year for the 100th. It had been too many years since my last visit. There I was at 16th Street and Georgetown Road, a wide eyed 68 year old with tears of joy streaming down my cheeks. Half my kids thinking the old man had slipped off the deep end and the rest hugging me with tears I their eyes too. Much has changed the halcyon and innocent days of the '50's, but Indianapolis is still hallowed ground and a magical place! After the race and a the pageantry, ALL my family understood my excitement. Now all I have to do is save my money for NEXT year. Whether you are hard core or not, make the time to spend the week from qualifying through race day and if the experience doesn't move you, call the paramedics 'cause you is dead!

    Thanks for the pics.

Side pocket in the cockpit of Sweikert's car caught my eye. Highly doubt it was for map storage, anyone have any idea what it was installed for?

I've been to Indy several times for the drags, and the old Car Craft Street Machine Nationals, you got to drive around the track, but I never took the time to go through the museum.

The Indy is the car museum that is in a class of its own!

In two weeks, I'll be in town to cover the Custom Car Revival. Then Monday I will shoot the museum.

My favorite memories of the garages at Indy 1961 -- Wally Parks (Hot Rod) -- Art Malone (driver of the Novi) Drag racer.

Thanks for posting. I grew up about two miles east of the speedway and have always been mostly a circle tracker.

The early days of the speedway and the nostalgia events there still hold a special place in my heart.

Brave souls. There were some pretty spectacular walk away from accidents today.
