Technical Model A spring rear spring pack removal

I know this has been discussed a number of times but since this is the first time I will be doing it I want to do it right without the dangers associated by doing it wrong. I have a Model A that is on what looks to be a Speedway chassis. The rear end has no shocks (I am going to fix that) a 8 inch rear end and a old transverse spring. After reading a number of threads here and else where I purchased a spring spreader. I am looking for some guidance perhaps step by step instructions on removal. Please note that the center bolt in the spring pack is missing and I can not get the what appears to be a 5/16 bolt back through the center, maybe a smaller diameter can be fitted through. Your help would be appreciated. Jack

 

You will need to take the tension off the spring with the spring spreader. Because you do not have a center bolt the only thing holding the spring together are the two "U" bolts that anchor it to the chassis and the two spring clamps on the spring. Once the tension is off the mainspring you can remove the shackles and release the tension on the spreader. As you remove the "U" bolts the leafs will be free. Are you sure the center bolt is missing, perhaps the bottom portion with the nut has broken off and the stud is still intact. With a good spring spreader it's an easy job.

 

Thanks you. I was kind of worried about not having the center bolt so I drilled all the crud out, got a grade 9 bolt and nut so I think the might me a moot issue. I really do appreciate your help! Jack

 

I have removed and installed them by using a large c clamp to slowly release and slowly tighten when reinstalling . Use plenty of caution super large amounts of energy stored up in that spring , engough to remove digits for closer inspections

 

Use 2 large C clamps one on each side just off center.And go sloooow.

 

If there's no center bolt the leaves are all loose and all you are spreading is the main leaf which should be pretty easy. Get a long bolt to pull the leaves together, clamp them, remove long bolt and put in the center bolt.

 

Got it out! Man did I have to crank on the spreader nuts. Glad I went to Lowes and purchased a large adjustable wrench. It would have been nice if the company that made it included some instructions, although even an idiot like me can finally figure it out. LOL!
