Technical Chevrolet 327 valve covers question?

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Steffen Jobst, Mar 30, 2017.

  1. My son asked me if it matters which side the breather/pvc valve is located. On most '68 up blocks we've seen the pvc is on passenger side rear of valve cover. As far as breathers we seen them placed all over the valve covers. In my dirt track days we ran two tall filter type breathers on drivers side cover & pvc on pass side. Does breather location matter in a high rpm engine?? Thanks...didnt want to start new thread for this silly question - thank you!

Mail came today, and I had a BIG surprise I've been waiting to show up. HAMBER "eaglebeak" , AKA David, sent me a pair of staggered bolt pattern, "PONTIAC" badged/embossed, SBC valve covers, and in very nice shape also. So, here's a big THANK YOU to one of our Canadian brothers for making my day. I needed that too, since my wife's car has been in the body shop since 2/20/17, and it's getting really old with the rental car, and "take me somewhere" favors. If there's ANYTHING I can ever do for for you Dave, I'm here! Thanks again, I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

IF I had any way of posting photos of these valve covers, I would. There are a few threads dealing with them here on the HAMB.

  5. Just some information ....the 327 valve covers for 1962 are different in the embossed area and its not a subtle difference and easy to spot , so the 62 covers are more rare.

Talking to an old timer today, asked about these O stamped valve covers. He said there were triangle stamped and O stamped rockers, the O stamped rocker has a longer pivot slot in to prevent bending push rods in motors with high lift cams. Is it possible these valve covers and rockers went together in a high lift application?

There never was a long slot rocker on a factory Chevrolet application, the "O" rocker had a better surface finish on the pallet, the area that contacts the valve stem. They may have had a different heat treat operation also, but I'm not sure about that.
Factory rockers will even clear the studs when running the 3927140 "off road" cam with it's .471 lift.
