Picked up a car today from an elderly gentleman and it came with this 455. It's all new from top to bottom, Offy 2x4 intake, edelbrock carbs, new comp cam, pistons, crank, the whole nine yards. It hasn't been fully put together, we just mocked everything up to got a look at it but my question is what is the market value on this engine and are there any major concerns with them? It's a 32 3 window. It's a glass body car. It has a lot of nice parts on it, ugly yellow but that will change soon! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
My 48 Olds has a 455 in it plenty of power for that big car when I first built it I had a 2:56 rear gear and it was a dog I put 3:08 gears in the car and made a big difference I love that big engine
As others have said, lots of torque with a fair amount of H/P. The heads are a bit restrictive in an Olds motor. Don't try to twist it like a small block Chevy. Most are built for about a max of 5000 rpm . In a glass car I doubt you will need more engine
Poor oil return from the top end. Don't sling it over 5k. Make gobs of torque right off idle. I'm not sure market value on them. I'd say 2-3k but I'm just throwing a number out there.
Allegedly those heads are really good castings. You probably already know the following information so sorry if I'm covering familiar ground once more. http://www.442.com/oldsfaq/ofhed.htm C '67 - '69 425 80 394548 A/C '68 H/O's. Toro's and 442's got big. 455 valves. Rumored to flow the best of all BB heads. Can still be found.
Yep- don't rev it much or it will dump all the oil to the top of the engine and eat the crank- like mine did! And that was at just 3500RPM for a few minutes (and a high volume oil pan and pump). Value will depend on the rotating assembly- new as in reconditioned or new as in aftermarket? The C heads flow better than most stock heads but Edelbrocks flow as good or better. To me the intake is where most of the value is at. I would say $2-3 K if you want to hold on to it for a while to the right buyer. Otherwise, $1200-2000. I virtually gave all my Olds stuff away and went back to Chevy.
I run a Mondelo 455 in my 68. Stump puller! Put it in a Cutlass or a speed boat, nail it, hire a chiropractor.
Oh, if you sell stuff off of it, interested in the valve covers! I have chrome ones I can send to you.
