I have converted the triangle shaped GM "Optikleen" glass bottles to radiator overflow bottles on some of my last few builds, but have wondered if anyone has ever had these explode due to the hot coolant? What other ideas have you guys and gals used for this purpose?

I use an old 16 oz Schlitz can on my "race car", and none at all on the other ones, because they never had them in the first place, and they survived all this time without them. So my guess, is that they are really not needed.

(the NHRA requires a 16 oz catch can)

I named my build after types
of alcohol so my 63 Bel Air wagon is named Cuervo. I have a chrome Cuervo bottle for an over flow tank.

  10. I use a one gallon plastic gas can if it'll fit. I got Stanley Stainless thermose that I'll probably use on my next disaster. Neither is too high tech but all it has to do is catch coolant.

    Overflow??? Catch can???
None of my cars run hot. And, if one did "wanna puke", it would do it the old fashoned way.

But if you have ever pulled into an event leaving a trail, or puddle of coolant under the front of your car you have to walk in, you don't want to repeat it!

I use an aluminum insulated bottle for cold/hot drinks, converted to serve as a catch can. I use it not just to be environmental, but a properly filled radiator should have a reservoir for expansion, to hold the coolant until it cools and draws it back into the radiator. Sure, old cars didn't have one, but they also had more over heating problems. IMG_7053b.JPG

Would that be the can or the strap and mount tabs?

He sends you everything pictured with either a polished or painted mount, black or brown strap, with or without decal.

On the street, all I use on either hot rod is a rubber hose. Don't race the '40 coupe, but on BGII, my hiboy '31 roadster, when I go to the strip I usually zip tie a drink bottle to the lower right hand headlight bracket and insert that rubber tube in it. Think I'm going to keep an eye out for one of those extruded aluminum beer cans with the twist top and hang on to it for use. Not too concerned about the NHRA requirement of 16oz. because if they get that strict I'm not going to be allowed to run a topless roadster with no roll bar anyhow
I bought one of those stainless puke tanks Speedway sells and replumbed it to work like the one Blues4U posted, but it looks so klunky I never installed it as I never lose any coolant from my Walker radiator.

Thanks, 29Stude; I don't do the F-book thing, but I do know how to Google.

JW blue bottle I got free (empty) at a party. It matches my paint pretty nicely and a little irony in my old tired truck.

I used a hunk of O/T Corvette aluminum driveshaft with hammerformed ends. Adding an overflow bottle adds about 10% to the cooling efficiency of your system.

And like my Granny said just before she fell off the Harley, "Its like a seven figure bank account, 500 HP under the hood, or a .45 strapped to your hip. You may never need it...but isn't it nice to know it's there."

A hose that dumps on the ground would be traditional AND period correct.

I know it's kinda funny to some of you, after reading your posts about letting coolant run onto the asphalt, but some of us actually have to swim and surf in your carelessness. If a dog slurps up some antifreeze, he's dead. If you live in a state near the ocean, that shit eventually flows into the sea. If you live inland, that shit eventually feeds into your well. Think about it .... you want your kids or grand-kids drinking it?
