Yup black or chevy orange, stick to the basics. If you do anything to stand out from the lowing herd, the lions might get you!

I understand the appeal of something flashy especially in a show car but in like to do engines, firewalls and inner fenders in black. it just makes the often inevitable color change down the line for myself of s future owner much easier. black goes with everything

  3. It depends...I have a 327 that I've been very slowly playing with that I would like to look as if it was installed as a
"crate" engine back in the day. It's going to have many factory-looking finishes including Chevy orange. I think it will be okay :D. Otherwise, I like lots of different colors including body color-matching. For me it's more about the block (and usually heads as well) as a backdrop for the bolt-on components that tend to be the focus anyhow. I try to create visual tension between parts and surfaces by contrasting materials (steel, aluminum, magnesium), finishes (gloss, semi-gloss and matte painted, polished, brushed, plated) and even colors (though colors tend to work best in limited numbers and often complimentary as opposed to contrasting).

If you are like me and need your engine to look a little wickeder than it really is, go with Chevy red!

Kart_eng.jpg I paint them any color I think they'd look good in the car they're going in! But for those who doubt that they are traditional, we went with exactly the way Barris painted the Vette six, in 1957, in his own truck. White engine in a copper engine compartment.

@ faclongeorge, I"m not saying they don't look great painted otherwise--and lots of those you posted are amazing. I'm just saying I have a penchant for the practical because color tastes/fads change so much.

Back in my glory days I thought chevys ruled along with my buddies and chevy orange power was the best. Then i worked for a grumpy old bastard that used to call our cars soup cans , with our orange motors. Haven't painted one that color since.

Built a SBC with my son. Painted it Ford blue to go with the rest of his truck. Ate the main bearings out of it. Polished the crank, painted it Chevy orange and never had another problem with it. Just sayin'

Been debating what colour to do my SBC for ages.......still can't decide.

I have decided it won't be either Chevy orange, black or body colour (Ford Viking Blue) so that's a start I suppose

Thought I'd be "traditional" and paint my Model B engine Ford Blue. What a mistake! just repainted my A engine go fast red. DSC02526.JPG DSC02436.JPG

The only thing that matters is that the owner likes what he sees when he pops the hood - period.

  23. IIRC, ALL of the Ford V8s of that era came with black long blocks, then had 'color-coded' valve covers and air cleaners to denote engine size and/or horsepower. Gold or chrome covers/AC was usually reserved for the hi-po versions, although there were a few exceptions (Falcon Sprints, Comet Cyclones come to mind). The black disappeared in '67 when 'Ford Corporate Blue' came into general usage across all car/truck lines and the AC got a decal denoting engine/carb size. This was true of most of the sixes too. Again IIRC, the Y-block was the last holdout for different long block colors, with Ford red in cars and 'old' Ford blue and bronze used in trucks; Mercury had their own colors. Valve covers were black, the AC was either black or argent.

Old thread but lots of great looking engines! How did all you guys prepare your longblocks for paint? I know how I did mine but just curious as to what everyone else's procedure is?
    Ford red.......

I blocked out the non-traditional intake so as not to offend.......
