Sorry , I stand corrected . I looked deep into this incident reading several archived news articles . One article stated he had transmission troubles and could not get 2nd gear . Hhmm, it was a reverse manual valve body auto trans . Plus another article had a witness say the car flew 20 ft into the air and landed on the crowd . Another article stated the 426 was supercharged ! Not the case ! Still the incident destroyed a family and hurt others .
No worries, there is a lot of misinformation out there. Apparently the track the accident happened at was a small outlaw track that allowed spectators way to close to the strip. One last thing on the Petty accident, The 43JR car was only built to fill contractual racing obligations. After that it was sold. The outlawed car was buried behind the shop to make sure it was never used again.
David Freiburger of Hot Rod Magazine didn't know the history of it either,and being a Mopar nut,made the mistake of asking Petty why he quit drag racing. He said Petty looked like he wanted to die at the mere mention of that accident,and that was about 40yrs later. Bad stuff happens sometimes to good people sometimes,unfortunately. The outlawed jr has been dug up. I havent followed the story lately. Im not sure if its being restored or being left in its current crushed state. There may be a thread devoted to the car.

the shirl greer car is so cool. one of the few awb cars from the era to go center steer. later on to stay competitive the trunk got lopped off. I saw shirls son at pri this last December. he had a large collection of family photos on his phone. great guy to talk to if you ever meet him.

The Guzler Charger was The Chargers car #2, purchased from Dodge after the program was scrapped. It was eventually wrecked at Cordova world series of drag racing. They were running on nitro and ran into handling problems.
That's good stuff. We are so lucky on the HAMB so many members worked on or remember the history of these cars we have a base of knowledge that is huge.
Unknown is one of the dodge chargers, maybe even pre guzzler, who knows? The history is a little murky. Looks hemi powered with the engine set back to me though. Anyone? I believe sensation is the old melrose 64. Cant remember if it's the max wedge or the hemi car. Looks like a 2% car. This is paper tigerII after buckeye owned it i assume.
the red 65 Plymouth was being driven by chett gibbs that day. the car is a real deal RO-23 car. it originally ran out of Michigan and was orange. in the late 60s it was converted to street duty. chet hooked up with the owner of the car to start racing it again. it ran several events in the late 80s -early 90s. the car was eventually brought to me for a change from carbs to alch inj. a week later it was ready to go. before the owner took the car away he wanted to see that it ran. we took it to a friends out in the country and I made a few hits out on the road. as it was being strapped down on the trailer a big oil leak was found near the oil filter. I never messed around down there. I think the o-ring got pushed out. I told him he better take care of that asap because the car cant run like that. fast forward more than a year. the guy puts a 18 year old kid behind the wheel for a pass at Indianapolis raceway park. the kid never raced a car before. the oil leak was never fixed and the tires got oilled. the car hit both walls and rolled over. as far as I know the car was never fixed.
Being a Bill Truby photo, I'd guess this to be at PID (Pittsburgh International Raceway). A guy from near by in Ohio, Lenny Ford, ran a very similar car. I remember seeing it sit outside a tire shop when I was a pup. Just a guess.
sounds about right. that is for sure the grove. I had a match race with the gambling man that day. the car had a big block chevy in it. it may have limped into the 12s. they ran it a few more times over the next few years and never got it to run right. the red 65 was last lettered with lethal weapon on the side. I have pictures of it at my old house getting the injection put on. funny thing with that car they brought it to me with a bad mag. they wouldn't pay me for the work I did unless they saw it run. so we ran to Kenosha to borrow the mag out of the jakes speed equipment car. we dropped it in and the car fired right up. the plan was to take it to the grove and make some passes before they towed back home. due to all of the fooling around with the mag it got too late in the day. that's how we ended up making hits on a country road. good thing because I would have been hitting the walls sliding all over the track and doing flips.
Charger #1 was destroyed in 1965. Jimmy Nix Charger #2 may be the red and white car pictured above. This is how it was found in the mid 80's, and the current restored condition.
