LB that is Eddie Sanzo's truck , he is the one standing behind the hood scoop. Jack Merkel sponsored it.

  5. loudbang,
the green C/G 331 is Al Tschida from Minnesota. The C/G 400 Blue car is an early pic of Barb Hamilton from Ohio. She's standing behind the car in the photo. The next group the black and white pic: C/G 445 pulling the front wheels is also Al Tschida from Minnesota. Smith and Stohr blue coupe racing the red pickup and the black & white photo is Jim Stohr from Minnesota and he still has the car i believe. The Grove Boys blue coupe is from Fort Dodge, Iowa and is now restored and owned by Ron Norman from the Meltdown gang. The dark green Sedan might be the car raced by Al Tschida and also at another time by Lutz & Lunberg, if it is another friend owns it in Wisconsin and may one day restore it also.

Good stuff. I should have recognized Barb I have posted her car more than a few times.

  7. This Bedford Gray '41 coupe also comes out of the twin cities area if Minnesota. Crazy how the lighting makes it look different colors in the two pics. It's definitely not blue. Closer in the under hood shot. Bedford Gray is a stock original color.

This statement is true...Tschida/Straka partnered the car after Lutz & Lundberg...who then went to a very quick Anglia.
And the Sedan is in Wisconsin. Jim Stohr still does own his Willy as well...Forest Lake Area.

40 Willys, primered black, moon discs, in front of the Grist Bros, who?
    Hello,

Here is another mystery Willys from 1960. This action does not happen often, but who is in front of the A/Gas Grist Bros Willys at Lions? It is a rare sight to see someone getting that much of a jump at the start in the A/Gas ranks, especially against the A/Gas record holder in the West. The norm is that the Grist Bros. would be the ones doing the hole-shot. It looks like a HOWARD CAM sticker on the rear panel of this mystery Willys. But the name of the driver and owner is still a question mark. Anyone?

Could be Elverne Pfeifer's car from '63 or Don Montgomery's "Rockethead" had a Howards Racing Cams sticker on it.

    Hey SG,
As I keep looking at the background, the title may be incorrect. It may be late 58 or early 59. I just noticed that the "pits or tower side" does not have any bleachers. That was from the beginning to about late 59. Now, I am sorry that it is labeled 1960 Lions.

In my final editing to be correct for a Lions Dragstrip display (in So Cal) later on in 2017, I have been cutting and editing every film part to make sure it is as accurate as possible to show racing from 58-59-60. This is obviously in the wrong title area. I did not take any films after late 1960 until one day in 1964. So, these cars have to be racing in 1958-59.
    Thanks,
    Jnaki

This classy Willys Gasser ran out of Don’s Hot Rod Shop, in Tuscon, Arizona. A blown small-block Chevy motivated the ’41 Willys in B/Gas Supercharged. Simple front straight axle and leaf springs plus Halibrand five-slot magnesium wheels all around show the seriousness of this car.

’40 Ford coupes have always been prized classics for street rods and in an earlier age, race cars. Here this Utah based ’40 running in B/Gas out of Stag’s Rod & Custom heads downtrack with injected big-block Chevy urge. All sorts of classic things are at work here… the straight front axle, no-hood front end and mile-long ladder traction bars.

The popular “Willy Charger”, Austin, Texas based, four-door Willys was anything but a family sedan! A 426 Max Wedge “B” V-8 provided plenty of power for A/Gas combat across the Southwest. Painted steel wheels and homebuilt suspension are evident along with M&H “pie crust” slicks.

Ron Regier’s B/Gas ’40 Willys ran across the Southwestern states in the 60’s and 70’s. The clean ’40 called Omaha, Nebraska its home and received sponsorship from Charley’s Speed & Machine and Valvoline Racing Oil for its 427 CID, big-block Chevy powerplant.

Pretty sure Don Toia's Willys is 354 Hemi powered in this picture. Same engine went into his Maverick gasser that replaced the Willys.

This old, faded photo from Dave Facey shows the MGM Racing Team, C&O Hydro, ’40 Willys truck pushing back after a run in B/GS at Winternationals.

    MGM-Willys-trk-Dave-Facey-pic-595x477.jpg

By the early 1960’s NHRA’s Winternationals had found a home in Pomona. Here the famed Grist Brothers big-inch Lincoln powered, chopped-top Willys takes on a C/Altered Model-A during Little Eliminator running. Note big Winternats banner and at rear, “Capitol Records” sign!

Gary Burgin would later gain fame with his “Orange Baron” nitro Funny Cars. Here’s his early effort, an A/GS Willys in the pits.

Back to pickups after that brief interruption

This ’41 Willys, running in D/Gas, out of Antelope Valley Speed Center, was an attractive, flashy regular in California Modified Eliminator racing.

This next one needs some clarification from you guys.

The first captions with these identified it as FAST EDDIE'S /Jack Merkel. Later on it was then identified as Sanzo Pellicane & Siedlecki. I have seen this car on the web but don't know who's car it was unless it changed hands along the way it is painted with Sanzo Pellicane & Siedlecki. Anybody know for sure?

Thanks for the pictures! What's with the headers on the Jack Merkel pickup? The valve cover looks like a SBC but the header bolts are on an angle.
