Indeed...That is not a chain saw.

  12. You're right, it's some sort of saw but with no chain.

Holy Moly....I wouldn't want to be standing anywhere near this thing when running! It looks stationary....so probably runs on 'big' engine contraption, and can't for the life of me figure out how it would be used with any kind of safety of merely walking away from it? It's scary from any angle!.....thanks for sharing!;)

My guess this is a Trencher, used to cut in ground, to bury electric wire cable or small pipes. Russ

I bet you are right....a trencher!;)

  20. I think it may be a drag saw, my dad and brother-in-law reconditioned a couple of old ones years ago. you can kind of see the arm in the photo by the motor.
    upload_2017-1-10_11-26-11.png

Edit: Gotta love Google: "A dragsaw is an early reciprocating saw using a 1.8 m (6-foot) steel crosscut saw to buck logs to length. Prior to the popularization of the chainsaw during World War II, the dragsaw was a popular means of taking the hard work out of cutting wood."

    From the net.
In 1948, at the Indianapolis 500, a six-wheeled car built by Pat Clancy, and driven by Billy DeVore powered its way to 12th position overall. The four rear wheels of the car were driven by two axles connected by a universal joint. The six-wheel Indy car only lasted one race, in 1949 it was converted back to a conventional 4-wheel racer. It remains the only six-wheel car to ever race at the Indianapolis 500.

The car actually ran in the 1949 500 Mile Race as well with Jackie Holmes as the driver. In addition, it was raced as a 6 wheeler in a few dirt track races as well. This photo was taken at one of those dirt tracks. As you state the car was converted back to a conventional 4 wheeled car and was raced for several more years before it was converted to run as a sprint car. A young Johnny Rutherford drove in some of his first IMCA races in the sprint car version of this car.

Just a photo I had never seen before, the text was taken from a website I just happened to stumble upon. I'm attracted to the oddities from racings' past.

Young Johnny Rutherford, possible Dizz Wilson involvement? I remember seeing a photo of the car somewhere that showed it being driven by Bob Kinser on the southern Indiana "outlaw" circuit in the late fifties or early sixties. May have been at Paragon. The car was pretty well thrashed by then.
