Does any one know how to tell the age of these?
The one with the boss on the side has D307 stamped on it
And the other has D235A stamped on it
They both have 201 cast on them. quick change 001.JPG

Not sure about actual production dates but. The housing on the right is an early casting notice there's no internal support rib running front to back along the top and bottom like the housing on the left. The housing on the left is a much stronger design I purchased a new one identical to that one from Halibrand in the early 70's cost a lot $225.00 including one set of change gears. Still running it to this day.

I'm no expert on 201 Halibrands, but my understanding is that the square boss indicates a Culver City case. That would be pre-1963. Did not know about the internal rib. I'm interested in the 'Dxxx' markings. Do either of the cases or rear covers have any city of manufacture cast into them?

I have added a pick of the covers.
    They both have
    HALIBRAND ENG
    CULVER CITY, CAL
on the bottom and the one on the left has
H-102 cast on the top upside down.
You can see that there are raised boss for the plug on the one on the left as well.

The H102 would designate that it was on a Midget rear originally. (Model Astyle) The rear covers are interchangeable from H101 and H201 cases. The Midget rear cover may have smaller O.D. bearings.
That about exhausts what I can tell you about what you have.

I have a magnesium 201 with the square blocks on the case sides and it has a number hand stamped along the bottom rib that starts with an LR and is followed by 4 numbers and another letter. I'd have to look at it again to get the exact info. It has an aftermarket cover on it so that is no help with dating it.

BTT, someone out there hopefully can add information with regard to age identification. Frames, are you out there?

After you decide which one to use you should give your buddy the one you don't need. Just saying.
