Is it true that there were two cross members for 40 Fords. They are 1 1/2 "different in depth as I can see. Has anyone run in to this .
There is no difference as far as the passenger car and commercial vehicle (pickup and sedan delivery)....
There is the 41 pickup front crossmember which has a different shape so they could use the new for 41 Six cylinder engine.
35-40 car and pickup same same At least they are supposed to be until you post pics and show us different.
40's had the same frames, car and pickup except for the body mounts on the frame rails. The six cylinder did not come out until 41. My pickup has the 1CG prefix VIN and the front crossmember with a steeper bend. The vertical sections are at 90° to the spring seat section.
I got another cross member from a 1939 and it's 1 1/2 inch shallow compared to the one in my truck. It would in a since lower the truck that much.
All crossmembers are NOT the same. There are differences in the engine mounting area for one thing. My 36 roadster sits on a 39 frame and I had to change the crossmember because the engine sat too high.
I pulled this deep cross from my 40 pick up. It was bolted in so it's my belief it was a replacement from a 1941, 6 cyl model.
Many years ago in the Dark Ages,, Frank Oddo wrote about the differences, I believe in was in a Rod and Custom Quarterly. The 'dropped' cross member was the hot ticket for a Ford into a Forty swap. Not seen too often.
Thanks for your great memory and the build was a 39 convert that he was doing with a Windsor Ford in a 39-40 application using the Bronco pan to not cut the stock firewall.........
