    INDY STYLE CAR?

  2. PJ&C \'67 March Meet.jpg It isn't very often we find a pic of our still missing Panneton Christensen & Jones '56 B/Gasser, but a good soul
named Kingwilly here on the HAMB had this one in his archives. If anyone else has any old San Fernando, or Bakersfield March Meet (this one is '67 March Meet) photos, or has any info on the whereabouts of this car, we would be extremely grateful.

I think the chain hoist broke. The rest of the car looks kinda' sanitary. Like that front axle. Maybe they're trying to figure out who has to buy the beer tonight.

Enloe and guffey appear to have it right. Offset driveline--most likely to get the driver lower like an Indy roadster. Tilting the engine was probably an effort to get the mass centralized.

Rocket cars were a match-race staple of the 1970s and early 1980s, and this was the first one, the X-1, built in late 1966 by Reaction Dynamics Inc., and driven by Chuck Suba. The car, also known as the Rislone Rocket, looked like a stretched-out Indy car and weighed just 750 pounds. Beneath the body was a tubular space frame, front and rear independent suspension, four-wheel disk brakes, and three drag chutes. The rocket motor developed 2,500 pounds of thrust. In August 1967 at US 30 Dragway in Illinois, Suba drove the X-1 to a 5.41-second elapsed time that remained untouched until late 1971 when Bill Fredrick's Vic Wilson-driven Courage of Australia rocket dragster ran 5.107 at Orange County Int'l Raceway in California.

I remember that Doug Deverich (sp?) who once ran a Willys gasser, built a Fiat bodied altered with an offset blown Chevy, to counteract the torque that can unload the rear wheel. Maybe this is it? I'm recalling from more than 50 years ago, so fuzzy on details

    upload_2016-10-27_4-44-43.png Hello, upload_2016-10-27_4-44-57.png

This blue Fiat was at Lions and Bakersfield in 1959-60. We were able to get some pits action and elimination runs on film. It was an impressive racer with lots of races against other cars/classes. It looks like a lot of the Fiat bodied racers back then. (I was told it is not the Ratican-Jackson coupe.) Win some, lose some…but always a hard charging coupe. Anyone with the names of driver and builder? Dave, Dean?

Dean, Junji, somehow "Schaller Cams" comes to mind, they ground a two-lobe speed cam, which ran in a Fiat altered they sponsored, but this looks Olds powered, think the Schaller car might have been Chevy powered. In the still the coupe is racing the Ono, Lew, and Gonzales blown Olds A-bodied modified roadster, so this was '61 or '62? I'm not really sure about the altered, darn!

Warren and Coburn ran many dragsters, but usually when referring to "Ridge Route Terror," it is this blown Chevy that comes to mind:

    Hey Dave,
That is the same roadster without the nose cone. But, I took the films in 1960. We did not come back to Lions or filming until 1964 to take movies of our friend, Atts Ono in his newly finished red 40 Willys. I guess, the clutch/fire accident took its toll on both of us. It just was not the place to go during recovery. So, yes, it has to be 1960.

The blue Fiat coupe has been a mystery for all of this time. So, I guess it will continue to remain a mystery owner/driver until someone can identify it.
    Thanks,
    Junji

Junji, I keep looking at the video, still don't recognize it --- the other cars, some: that is the Boudakian Brothers Fiat in the last frame, from Visalia, CA.....and here is a shot of the Ono. Lew, & Gonzales roadster with the nose on, at Inyokern...I'll keep looking at it...and yes, it could be 1960.
