I have a 340261 4bbl intake lined up to purchase and I'm wondering what other carbs and size will fit it besides the stock Rochester.
Not looking for HP just a good bolt on and go carb.
    It's for a pretty stock 350 build.....bored .60 over.
    I'm thinking 600-650? Edelbrock/Holley....etc.

If the intake is for a Rochester Q-Jet......What about a Spread Bore Holley...it is made to fit a Q-jet intake.

I've never had any luck with the Holley spread bores. A Q-jet would be my choice for that intake but I would probably pass an find a nice intake for a square bore Holley or Edlebrock.

Adapters are cheap to add a square flange (holley/edel) but they will add an inch of height....the spread bore holley is a great idea if you don't want a q-jet...I think they make a 650 in either vacume secondary or as a double pumper....

FOr a "bolt on and go" carb, it's hard to beat the Q-Jet....

  8. With that intake just run a Q-Jet. There are great and last for years if set up properly. That intake was made for a Q-Jet and even with an adapter it wont run as good as it would with a Q-Jet.

Edelbrock makes a 'Q jet' replacement, a spreadbore that bolts right up.

If i recall the roundy round racers like that particular casting so you might want to resell it on Ebay,i never understood why they prefured some castings over others,Probably make enough $$$ off it to buy yourself a nice new fancy aluminum manifold.

Ok not knowing SBC to well......
    square bore.......spread bore?
I take it the one I am looking at is spread bore........2 small inlets in front 2 large in behind those
square bore is all same size holes? If so, I already have a square bore.
I have been told spread bore is a better setup. that's why GM went to it?

Well, if that's true......he has 2 for sale!
They are pretty heavy and shipping from Canada to anywhere gets expensive!

Also, I am looking for cruising rather than high performance.

That intake was designed for a Rochester Quadrajet but you asked what other carb besides Rochester would be good. If it was mine, I would bolt a Q-jet to it and go but if you really want some other type carb, then I would get an intake to match the carb you chose.

That's all I'm trying to say. If you want a Holley or E-brock, then get a square bore (all 4 holes the same size) intake that fits the carb correctly with no adapter. I personally have never used an Edelbrock spread bore (2 small primary and two large secondary bores) and the Holley spread bore carbs I have had were trouble getting to run right.

  15. Edelbrock used to make spread bore carbs that were direct bolt on for Q-jet http://www.carburetion.com/Rochester.asp
No longer available new, figure out which one of the discontinued models would work for your application and try to find a used one. (Ebay, HAMB)

Otherwise an adapter and a new Edelbrock

Q-jets aren't that hard to rebuild, they are easier to rebuild than 4gc's, some have sleeves that can be changed out for throttle shafts. try to rebuild your old one. What have you got to lose? Find a copy of Doug Roe's Rochester carb book, Q-jet heavy.

    Thanks.
I'm just trying to figure out what intake and carb setup to use o my rebuilt 350.
    It's for my 1919 Dort w/700r and S10 rear.
I can go new intake and carb if need be.
Just need some advise for the setup.

and thought an older very less expensive intake would do the trick.

The holley 4175 would bolt directly on to that spreadbore intake and thottle cable, kickdown cable, fuel line should bolt right up.

But why spend $500, when you can get a nice rebuilt q-jet for $300? (the q-jet MAY run better......)

A Qjet may be $300 there unfortunately it gets + 30% to become CDN dollar then shipping but at the same time so does the new $600 Holley!
    Ouch!

  20. Will the person selling the intake include original carb? If so, buy a kit ($60) and try to rebuild it. They are easier than motorcycle carbs to rebuild, you will be surprised.

Also, you can get a Q-jet core on Ebay for $25 or $50. Just make sure the throttle shafts aren't seized, and the kits will generally have every part that will need replacing.

    Hey clunker....thanks.

Do the years have anything to do with the 340261 intake? As this on is listed from '85 - '90
    Ooops....never mind Universal fit!

The Q-Jet is a great carburetor. Another spread-bore that was specifically designed and calibrated for the SBC is the Carter thermoquad part number 9800s. It will bolt onto the Q-Jet intake, and the linkage is set up for Chevrolet. The fuel line does enter the carb in a different area, otherwise, pretty much a bolt-on swap.

The 9800s was later superceded by 9810s, if you need an EGR port.

An aluminum version of the Q-Jet manifold was produced for a few years. You can usually pick one up at a swap meet, with carb for under a $100 cdn . Not a Corvette only item.

  28. Yep, I tried selling an aluminum one for over a year for $30, never sold. Ended up giving it to a neighbor kid because he wanted to lose the cast iron boat anchor and he had no money.

Well I went ahead and bought the intake manifold (here) and the rebuilt Qjet (on Ebay).
So I guess that ends that!

Sorry to those who like the square bore but thanks to everyone for all your help and advise.
