LITTLEVILLE – A man and his two granddaughters were flown to Huntsville Hospital on Wednesday morning after they were involved in a wreck at 8:51 a.m. on U.S. 43 near the old Tequila Club, just north of Bullington Lumber Company.

Littleville Police Chief Chris Joly said Ronald R. Hickman, 56, and his two granddaughters, 6 and 9, both from St. Louis, Missouri -- were in a vintage car that collided with an extended cab truck pulling a 16-foot trailer. The truck was trying to turn across U.S. 43.

Joly said Hickman, of Dalton Lane, Tuscumbia, was flown from the scene to Huntsville Hospital.

Emergency personnel said the two girls were taken to Helen Keller Hospital, and then flown to Huntsville.

Joly said he did not know the extent of the injuries, but the girls were talking at the scene. Emergency medical personnel at the scene said Hickman appeared to be in critical condition.

The chief said the driver of the extended cab truck, who is from Haleyville, was not injured.

Reports indicate Hickman was driving a 1934 Roadster convertible.

“Apparently, they had been out for a ride in their vintage car when the accident happened,” Joly said.

He said the truck driver was going north on U.S. 43 and had pulled into the old Tequila Club parking lot to turn around.

“When he came out of the parking lot, he came out going north and then turned across the highway to go back south,” Joly said. “Witnesses said Hickman’s car was in the inside lane, so when the truck turned (to cross the highway) the car slammed into the side of the truck. He didn’t even have time to hit the brakes.”

He said the truck driver said he didn’t see the car when he turned across the roadway.

Authorities said a portion of U.S. 43 had to be closed for about 20 minutes to get a helicopter and ambulances in to transport the injured people.

Joly said the car did not have a backseat. It hit the truck between the cab of the truck and the bed.

The accident remains under investigation by Littleville police.

Hope they can tell Ron the girls are OK. That might help in his recovery. Wasn't his fault but I am sure he feels bad about it.
Thanks for the info and pictures. Could happen to any of us. Prayers to the family.

Ron is a well known rodder and has ran that beautiful roadster all over the country. Prayers for Ron. I understand that the two little girls will recover.

Such a tragedy for the family and hopefully all will pull through. Prayers are needed for them while the doctors perform the required surgeries. We all need to be very cautious when taking the children for a ride.

  28. Don't know Ron, but he doesn't live far from my cousin Bill Bailey who has worked in radio broadcasting in that area for a long time. Praying that he and the girls will fully recover. This sort of thing can happen so fast. About two weeks ago, I came upon the scene of a wreck with two fatalities moments after it happened and before police/fire/ambulances arrived.
