Glassed up and curing. 3 layers of fiberglass cloth and resin.

Shouldbe fully cured in an hour or so and then I can peel off the plastic and tape from the outside. 20160628_163552.jpg

Larry, you're doing such a beautiful job building these fenders you"ll have to run them all of the time, at least I would!

    Not started yet
I've been busy building and have not torn the car down to ship parts off yet.
I want to get as much fabbing done as I can and keep coming up with more to build :)
I plan to get there (disassembly) sometime soon :D

Very nice glass work Blue, I'm always in awe of people doing their own glass mods.
I have a bunch of work ahead of me so I watched some vids on various home level projects to get an idea of what to expect. Most of what you see on the Tube videos looks like a chicken coop exploded.
    Have you stopped itching yet?

:D Actually there has been no itching involved yet at all.
I wore long sleeves and a dust mask and stood in front of a large fan aimed out of the shop doors to do the cutting.
After that the resin and cloth doesn't generate any itchy dust.
The resin curing is smelly but that isn't hard to deal with.
All in all the fiberglass work isn't that difficult.

One completed fully removable rear fender mount.
    Ready to mount the fender.
The bicycle forks sure make nice fender mount material.

I have a problem to overcome, not sure how I will solve it but I am pondering.
The rear fenders are just large enough that they are not going to be well enough supported by the 2 supports.
With the fender mounted there is far too much vibration generated by a sound thump or two on the fender.
Bouncing harmonics from running down the road would quickly become a real problem I think.
I have to rethink the situation and come up with a solution.
The front fenders being much smaller do not share the same issue.

If not then fenderless will rule and the fenders will be strictly to bolt on for possible inspections and then live on the shelf the rest of the time. :D

I am going to try to solve this dilemma however because I'd like to be able to run them if I want.

Would adding a steel flat bar across the tire, tying the two brackets together work? By joining them, independent movement would be eliminated, and the fender would flex less bonded around the radius vs just on the two horizontal mounts. Longer trips with rain potential sure would benefit from these fenders.

Would a third support to the curved brace or all the way across the inner fender help or just add more stuff to vibrate? You have done a very clean job with these but I like the run 'em when you need 'em program. Quality work like the rest of the build.

I am considering that as a possibility.
Also wondering if making the mounting metal strips over the tire out of thicker metal would help.
    They are 3 /16" now.
Works great for the front, the rear may need thicker straps.

I'm not sure on that. I thought of the extra brace and may try that as it would be easy to try and remove if it didn't work.

There is a point where too much extra weight will just add to the problem.

    We have a winner. :)
I decided to give that idea a try, as I said it had been something that I thought about.

Adding the 3rd support and a couple of extra bolts holding the fender is going to work.

Like all cycle fenders they are bound to shake around but it will be ok.

No more crazy out of control stuff.

I should be able to run them or not as I choose

    Fender mounted and bolted down.

It's much better and I'm feeling better about it now.

I'm going to be trying fender less and fendered when I finish the car and see what I like best.

Maybe it will be like changing your shoes lol.

Of course they will look even better with the PU bed back on I think.

Very nice. Clean fab on the fenders and the rest of of your project as well!

  23. Now Larry, I realise to remove the front fenders is a very simple affair, what is involved with the removal of the rear fenders now with the third brace across the middle of the fender ? I having trouble understanding the way you have attached them to the diff housing .

  24. Marc, the mount clamps around the housing and splits in two, the centre brace unbolts and the rest will flex enough to slip off the housing, hope I got that right. All very clever. JW

Yes, you have it right. :) The fronts can be removed in one piece with the fenders mounted, the rears take a little more work but when they are removed there is no evidence that they were ever there.

I'm still undecided as to whether I will run them or not.
I think time will tell on that one once I drive it without them and then fit them and try driving with them.

I'll form my preference and plans later on.
Right now I am leaning to no fenders and maybe put them on occasionally.
    Larry.

  26. I will need to make some for my RPU as I will need them for Cert.here. We can get a fenderless exemption but I need to be in a Hot Rod club for two years to get it, I don't like clubs and don't belong to one.....yet, so they will be coming off after Cert. and just risk it for the first two years.
I have driven the RPU on gravel roads and in the rain and I was surprised how little got flicked up. JW

  27. Hey Jeremy , I'm a member of Early Iron Street Rods Inc. which is NZHRA affiliated and only has a base yearly membership fee of $45.00, no meetings as such and Gary who organises the club, emails out all incoming information on upcoming events in heaps of time. It is an absolutely brilliant way to belong to the NZHRA . I wasn't a member for two years ever before I received my fender exemption either just quietly. So you may chose to have a look at our club. I also didn't have fenders on my T when it went through Certification either but I do have a very basic set hanging in the garden shed if I need to fit some. I will have to find where to hang a front number plate though when I get it back on the road which is a damn nuisance .

We are coming to the end of the major fabrication on this one :)
    Never thought I'd say that.
There will still be some small stuff once I tear down for finishing.
Going to be doing some interior panels and things like that next. :)

However, maybe it was premature to say that. :D I always seem to find something else to build. :)
