Hello hambers. What is a nice muffeler to use that has a nice light rumble slight throaty but not anoying on the highway. What do most of you guys run?
Good question. I'd like to upgrade my Caddy a little. So also curious. I have a buddy running Magnaflows and love the Purrr. I'll see if I can find out a model.
I would stay away from chambered mufflers. If by "annoying" you mean drone or resonace, mufflers with longer casings and running tailpipes will help with that. Of course too much muffler and it may sound too tame, you gotta find that right balance.
we just put a set of walker sound f/x mufflers on our old ford with a 390. beautiful sound and slight rumble on the freeway. 18.00 each on rock auto. we will buy them again.
Walker turbo mufflers, parent company of dynomax, but have been around for years. Pretty much an industry standard, I bet your local exhaust place carries them already. http://www.walkerexhaust.com/products/mufflers-muffler-assemblies/universal-fit
Ok i will be investigating all of these. I truely apriciate the input here. And yes what i mean by anoying is drone i do not want that.
Porters are nice, a little more $$, but a quality product. They are sort of civilized sounding when necessary but get nice and loud when punched. Drone is a different deal and depends on the overall length and resonant frequency of the exhaust system altogether or somesuch. A good muffler guy knows how to stop it, it can be annoying.
Running Summit Cherry Bombs on my Ford... not installed yet but will have exhaust out to the back bumper.
I threw a pair of Thrush glasspacks on my '68 Cadillac when I had it, got longer ones 28" maybe... anyway, they sounded really nice and not annoying on the highway. They're cheap too!
Go to the Flowmaster website. They have some great charts that each type of muffler and how they sound. Sent from my SM-N910V using H.A.M.B. mobile app
What he said. Have a Thrush glasspack on my 68 Caddy and it sounds great. Nice and mellow, but still has a noticeable sound. I have Pypes Street Pros on my 55 (entire Pypes header-back system in stainless was $450). Can't beat them for the money in my opinion.
Just replaced some Pypes mufflers with Dynomax Super Turbo's. Haven't fire it up yet but really looking forward to it- supposed to be a much quieter sound which is what I was looking for.
Which ones were you running? They have 3 different models, and the Street Pros are the quietest. I'd put them somewhere between a Flowmaster 50 and 40 series. Nice bark at idle and at full tilt, but mellow when cruising.
X2 ^^^^^^^ Nice mellow rumble. My pops has them on his 40 sedan and I have them on my 32 sedan. I had them on my Flathead powered 26 T modified but it was to quite so I took them off and now run straight pipes.
Smithy's on my Biscayne....located so they only have about ~3 1/2 feet of tailpipe...also used 2 1/2" exhaust all the way... very nice noticeable sound but not annoying...
a lot depends on your ride, insulation, type motor, your preference of mild to wild - lots of opinions will continue - one size/sound does not fit all
Best bet to run a set of new 1963 Corvair turbo mufflers right from NAPA. HA HA anyone remember those?
Brockton Mellowtone. Steel packed. They sound great on my Yblock. Price and quality is hard to beat. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/brockman-mellowtone.793027/#post-11427121
I like the generic "turbo mufflers", you can find many brands. Tailpipes all the way out the back make a big difference also.
Another vote for Brockman Mellowtones! Mine are glass packed. I forget the length, maybe 20"??Great guy to deal with and very helpful. Good quality and had them at my door in a few days. Installed them as far back as possible ahead of the rear axle. Throaty idle, raps out nice(pretty loud), but cruising down the highway is mellow. No drone. Love em.
I like'd the sound of 24" smithy's on my 6cyl chevy's with duels , I think they were 24", anyway , also really great sounds on my 1940 Ford Cp , with flathead, ( do not have any more). But I vote for Smithy's.
