It's the real thing ! Back in the 60's you could get a cheap plastic replica form K-Mart. My buddy heisted this one from a pool table in a not so nice bar one night when we were kids. ( same time period ) He kept it all these years thinking that he would use it on one of his Rods. A couple weeks ago he gifted it to me. Needless to say, I drilled and tapped it that day ! I wanted a V8 knob since I first saw one on here about 10 years ago. A couple months ago a friend gave me one. I also always wanted a century of progress but when I found one I was disappointed how tiny they are. It's NOS and still in my friends museum gift shop along with quite a few new swirl glass ones.

  7. My @jimmygrrr super-duper custom shift knob came in today! Can't articulate how pleased I am with this little jewel. The 1923 nickel used for carving was carried & passed down by my grandfather. A fitting tribute to the one who inspired my project and instilled the love of hot rods into our family.

    Simply awestruck by the craftsmanship.

Those caramel bakelite with a red jewel are among my favorites. I have a couple. Also one that is a clearer yellow called apple cider.

That is a hoist or pto control knob from a farm truck, probably red before it faded.

I guess I have to concur in the idea that a shift knob should be a "jewel" in the center of the interior. In my case, the jewel is jade, both set on top of the knob and inlaid into the sides. The Russian Olive burl came from a tree I played under as a kid. Both the jade and the wood come from my ancestral home in Wyoming. [IMG]

I guess it's no surprise someone made shift knobs from the stuff. I have a box full of Fordite chunks, but none quite large enough to make a shift knob from. It would make some cool inserts into the top of a knob, though.

Can anybody recommend a company that will custom engrave a shift ball? I need the following pattern done in white on a 1.75 inch black ball with a M10x1.25 shaft. I sent an inquiry to one of the first ones google brings up but they never answered my support question.

So the metric gave away the continent. The crazy shift pattern is prewar MB. 3rd gear is direct and 4th is overdrive with a dog leg clutch off of 3rd. Remembering that reverse is off to the left and not right over 1st is what would make an engraved ball nice. The gears are straight cut so you need to know just where you are going, and 1/2 the time you need to let the clutch out a bit to get things spinning enough to get it in gear.
