Technical Steering shaft, to pin or weld. Opinions please.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by crminal, May 25, 2016.

  1. Working on my 57 F100 and changing from "Armstrong" steering to power steering. Using my original column and wheel.
The new PS box requires a rag joint which I purchased. It has a long sleeve (tube) with the correct ID (3/4") for the stock Ford shaft (3/4" OD) to fit into. I have dressed the shaft for a snug fit into the sleeve.
There is a 4" overlap. What is the tried and true way to attach them together. I hear weld, don't weld, pin with 1/4" roll pins, bolt, etc.
Bolting won't work as there is only a 1/4" tolerance (per side) from the sleeve to the steering tube which covers the whole thing.
Looking for tried and true safe methods for this attachment.
    Thanks

  2. I went for overkill and both pinned and welded my steering shaft.

Rosette welds, maybe 6 of them, a press fit would have been good as well but too late for that. It will be power steering now so it will see even less strain.

Mine was a light press fit that I TIG welded both around the joint as well as a few plug welds thrown in for good measure...I think I also used a couple of set screws in there when I was establishing the fit that got TIG welded into place as well, but it's been years since I did it - and it's still in service!

  10. Understood.
Rosette welds? What is you feeling on pins anchored with rosettes. Comfortable with my welding but also like a mechanical connection.
From these suggestions, I'm getting a direction.
    Borgeson mentions roll pins. thoughts?
