I recently bought a 36 Ford model 51 fire truck. It had originally, of course, a 21 stud, 221 CID V8 flathead in it. However, I bought it without an engine.

I still have the original flathead out of my 51 Mercury. I had replaced it with a built 51, etc, etc. Will my original 51 Mercury engine drop easily into my 193636 model 51 commercial truck? It appears that it should.

What problems am I going to encounter?

Thanks you in advance, I eagerly await response.

Should go in just fine. You will need truck 8rt water pumps and the truck 8rt bell housing. You may be able to use Merc bell hosing as well if you have it.

Thanks AVator. I sort of suspected that. 13052643_10154110168935908_1808253226_o.jpg

    Nice looking vehicle! Best wishes.

FYI. I have an 8rt in my '35 pickup

The stock '51 Merc staggered narrow belt pumps could also work with spacers, similar to or same as the stock Merc. This would save having to change pumps, and crank, generator and fan pulleys. The '48-'52 truck cast iron, or '49-'50/early '51 Merc stamped steel 3" 1/2 bell will mate the truck tranny, although the truck bell will allow the larger 11" clutch.
The Merc oil pan is rear sumped, like the truck, and using the Merc starter plate with the oil pan attachment bracket should be considered, because of the heavy truck application. (Ford used the pan attachment with all 3" 1/2 bells for a reason)
One issue may be the fan and it's lower (I think) location with the radiator, compared to stock.
