I have a 1962 Pontiac Bonneville. The tires died of old age over the winter. They are 14 inch tires and I think the wheels (stock) are 6 inch wide. 14 inch tires are scarce and I have no desire to put new 14s on the car. I'd like some 15 or 16 inch Pontiac wheels that would have proper backspace so that they would fit properly. Please, anyone who has made such a change, tell me what to be looking for in the wrecking yards. Thanks.

Pontiac offered a heavy duty optional 15'' wheel in '62, but you'd have to fight the Super Duty guys to buy any. Buick, Pontiac, Olds, & Cad wheels all will fit. The Buicks came in 3 widths, while most Olds & Pontiac will have 5'' rim. After '55, the Cad has a weird looking backwards center, and any wheel cover will fit.
    16'' wheels on a '62 Pontiac ?? You're 4 days too late !

I changed from the 14's to 7 inch 15's with 31/2 inch back space with 225/75/15 tires IMG_3088.JPG . Very close to the rear fenders but have been fine 30k miles.

  5. Those were an oddball 4 3/4" bolt circle IIRC. Some 15" Olds or Buick wheels may fit it, just a matter of finding a good set.

Your '62 is a 5 on 5'' bolt circle there are tons of sites that will tell you what other cars and trucks use a 5 on 5'' bolt circle wheel.
You have to check your back spacing and also the size of the center hole to make sure it will fit over the center hub. http://www.vehicleboltpattern.com/
