Technical Can anyone identify this steering box?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by sparkydeluxe, Mar 26, 2016.

  1. Was told it maybe came off an old international, but I've had no luck positively identifying it. Anyone?

    Thanks!

Look up Ross steering boxes. The Google photos show several similar ones that fit a variety of rigs.

SAE lines on all the bolts...that sets an age cutoff I think in early 1950's...not sure exactly when. Unlikely that all the bolts were swapped out, likely original.
Direction of rotation would give a clue on whether fore and aft or cross type steering.

  8. Bolted on my car and needs some work. Don't want to tear into it and not be able to come up with parts when I have no idea what it is.

Most likely a Ross box,a smaller version of what Peterbilt used in the 40's and 50's nothing in them to go wrong and with a little hunting parts can be found,I just recently went thru the one in a 40's truck and we made our own bronze sector bushings and machined the end for a newer seal.

There’s a steering gear rebuilder here in SoCal that are pretty sharp with this kind of stuff meaning older steering hardware. I defer to them when I’m at a loss on this type of stuff.
