I really like this look. I'm finding really difficult to find new white letter 14 inch tires. It seems what was available just a few years ago is not now. Tire shopping for 14s reminds me of shopping at Lowes...lots of junk, too much, too many choices but nothing that you really need, nothing that's right. White walls, I'm not feeling it on a Fairlane. For a bias ply I like the Coker Wide ovals but I'm not sure which size to get....the car is stock. For new radials, I like the looks of the white letter Cooper Cobras and some BF Goodriches but some the sizes available get into the SUV or snow type tires. Does anybody have suggestions?
Paint the lettering yourself. I use Testors model paint, and it wears like iron! It's been 8-years/18k miles on the last vehicle I did, and just starting to evenly wear off.
They're getting rare, but I recently bought some BFG T/A RWL in 14" that weren't SUV or snow tires and had no problem finding them. Any tire shop can get them for you, or go to Tirerack.com.
firestone wide oval, or polyglas gt are available at a price, and are the only white letter tires that make sense to me on a car like that.
^^That. The last decent looking 'old-ish style' RWL were the old small letter Goodyear Eagle ST's, long out of production. Ante up to Coker for some Poli-Glas, or Stones repro's. I'm thinking some red-lines might keep it in the ball park better than 'new' RWLs. JMO.
Raised white letter tires look out of place on a car of that vintage to me, I'd go either skinny whites, redline or blackwalls. To each his own.
I bought some Cooper Cobras for a Plymouth that were 235 X 60 x 14. Turned them black wall out and painted the Cobra head red The white letters went that bad tho.
Raised white letters look very 1985 to me. Through so me black walls on it or pony up for some redlines. Redlines would look killer on it.
White letters were very popular on new sporty and muscle cars in the late 60's and early 70's. Before that not so much.
Joker, that's not my car. Mine is a Sports Coupe just like that one. I think what really sets that car off is the Sports Coupe caps. Looking at it I think it would look just as well with black walls. Medium width whitewalls with caps look OK but they give kind of an old lady vibe or more of a reserved look, at least to me. Now, medium width whitewall piecrust cheater slicks on plain painted wheels on the back is a good look. I may put some cheaters on some extra 15s I have just for that. No way I would run them all the time though. That's for later, first I need to get the car going on a good set of street tires. Here is a commercial for a 64 Sports Coupe. Note the whitewalls. Of coarse its in the grass but look how low that car sits. I thought my back springs may need attention but looking at that commercial, I think it just sits that low. A bumper Jack is a must with a flat. I'm going to add some "Hot Rod". The 289 Challenger needs some attention, it's locking up some where, it could be cylinder wall rust but I think it might have spun a bearing or either a home rebuild mixed the caps/bearings up. It's been idle since 1977. I've got a 68 302 and C4 combo I can use until I get the Challenger 289 and Green dot C4 rebuilt. The 302 has an old Crane Fireball 294. I do believe it's a close copy of the K code or Lemans camshaft.
