It's been a while since I have updated. Didn't get much done. Painted the rear end after a rebuild and started putting it back together.
Got a few things done the last couple of weeks. Rust repair! Rebuilt the rotten sub rail and fixed the quarter panel and wheel well on one side. On to the next side.
I think you want the one with springs as shown: http://www.vintageford.com/sect_search.cfm?LineName=Model A&Line=Model A&Category=Clutch&StartRow=21&PageNum=2 click on part 00325 to enlarge. With all of the junk out there I think I would find a core (swap meet?) and have it rebuilt by a good company. Something like Fort Wayne Clutch comes to mind but check on fordbarn. Charlie Stephens
Thanks for the link Charlie. I am going to have to have a special hub built and then adapted to a modern disk. I wish I would have gone with the AA bell for the T-5 and I wouldn't have had to get a disc made for my application. I am glad that I have those pictures of what will work so I have a good idea of approximate dimensions of what needs to be done. Whatever I end up having built will be the center sprung hub. I have a brand new A clutch in my stash of stock parts that was built in the '60s (judging by the box that it is in) that I could use to modify for this. I also have a couple of original discs that can be rebuilt also. With the popularity of the T-5s I am a bit surprised I could only find one kit that would work. That kit was from Auto Restorations and is Poor quality. Not to mention that place is out of business. There has been a couple of threads about the safety of their open drive t-5 conversion for the model A. I am glad I went with the adapter to keep the torque tube.
Anyone have a link to that thread regarding the banger and T5 combo? What kind of speeds would it comfortably cruise at? I love this build and the very first pic of the car sittin in that field. That look alone would make me take it home! Keep it up. Love where your going with it.
Here is the link for the Torque tube adapter. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/jeep-t5-trans-in-the-torquetube.256226/ I hope to be able to get about 60MPH with the t-5. may have to change ring and pinion to get much more. Also will need more HP to push it too. Especially at 6000 feet elevation in Cheyoming. The car sat outside my garage for about 25 years. Needed space for other things. Wish it hadn't sat out for so long. I wouldn't have had to replace ALL the wood in it.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...to-freeway-speeds.963536/page-4#post-10868513 There is a nice guy on here working on a Volvo M40 conversion, I know it aint a T5, but it seems promising. i dont know how avlible they are near you? But a modern transmission will always help an old banger come to life
Subscribed. I'm also tall and you're doing a build that really appeals to me (no chop, no channel, banger build to start, and who knows where it ends,...). Good luck!
Wow I haven't posted in a month and a half. Holidays and so on. Still working on wheel wells and now Cowl panels. Hope to have some productive days in the shop. Here is a couple new pics. I made some sheet metal clamps like some I saw here on the HAMB.
Really like what you are building ! Very clean work. What backing plates are you using? F2 Or ? Thanks George
I am using the 12" speedway set up. I had to modify them a bit to work on the back like you would '40 backing plates for the A rear end and grind the spindles a bit for them on the front. I have been trying to use a lot of vintage parts but I have bought a few new pieces.
Binger, I'm really diggin' what you're doing with this car. I'm hoping to make some progress and updates on my coupe.
Encouragement and inspiration from the HAMB keep me going. I have been to the hot rod hill climb the past two years to watch and I am pushing hard to be able to participate this year. Trying to dedicate as much of my spare time as possible to the garage. Lucky for me Mrs Binger wants me to get the car done as bad as I do.
I love the work you doing. I'm about to do the same thing for a set of '40 radius rods for mine. My stock ones keep hitting the frame because I stepped it. Did you just cut the front end off and weld them on the shortened rod? Or did you have to do any reinforcing? Thanks for the build thread!
I welded the ends on to the shortened rods. I didn't feel any reinforcing was necessary. The bones were in great shape and there was plenty to weld to. If I have problems I will address them when they come up. With only running a banger I don't think I will have any problems.
I found this license plate light at the swap meet this last weekend. Exactly what I was looking for. Didn't find much else but a nice trip with the wife for the day.
I have solved my clutch issues. Had to sacrifice a center section splines out of a t-5 clutch and an input shaft from a stock model a transmission. Had a machinist friend of mine build it. Decided to build this nifty adapter instead of welding to a clutch hub. This way I can use any stock model A disc.
I had a couple of hours in the shop today and disassembled the windshield frame. Every thing on this car was rusty. I got all the screws out and the frame apart Without breaking the glass. I was surprised it came apart as easy at it did. I thought for sure I would end up with a pile of glass.
Binger what did you use for a bellhousing, the stock 3 speed one and how's it differ. Going through the planning of this myself. Thanks
I am using the stock bell on this project. Hence all the funky stuff with the clutch adapter. An AA bell is shorter and doesn't require any adapter. I believe that the pilot on the input shaft on the T-5 needs to be shortened to use the AA bell. Looking back I would try and find the AA bell housing. I already built my cross member and shortened the torque tube so I am committed to using the adapter I had built. If it doesn't hold up I will look into getting a clutch Disc made.
Ok even with the AA bellhousing youd still need something in between the trans and bellhousing to adapt the different bolt patterns (?) and mount your pedals to? Great build by the way.
Thanks about the build. Its coming along. Not too much longer then its going into paint. There is a 1/2" plate that is between the bell and the trans. I think there is a pattern on the t-5 to torque tube thread. I am using stock pedals. There is a pic of that set up above. brakes uses a rod attached to a bellcrank I built on the side of my battery box with a '66 El Camino master cylinder. I received my alliance tag the other day. Put the car all back together for final checks before I take it apart to begin paint. Getting closer.
