For many in SoCal, anything east of the 605 was "back east". But we learned in our geography classes in high school. Now "back east" starts at the I-15...

Emory Cook in the Cook & Bedwell "Isky 5-cycle Special" at the AATA nationals at Cordova, IL. C&B lost to Garlits at that meet, which helped put Garlits on the map as C&B held the world's drag racing speed record at around 169...Garlits would break that at 176 at Brooksville, FL in November '57

Roach & Torgerson from the Santa Barbara CA area.... they would add a blower and run A/GS with this full bodied A sedan...has headlights, windshield wiper, even a front license plate...the gas rules required "street legal" back then. I saw this car run as an A/GS at San Fernando, really impressive.

    Hi Dave

Micky's twin looks like it had different types of engines, one maybe a alum F85 Olds?

Don, I had not noticed that until you pointed it out, sure looks like different engines, maybe one is an F-85. Different valve covers, different valve cover angles suggest different heads....good call, anyone else know anything about this?

Looks like Olds and Buick 215 based engines, heads only real difference. Early Tempests got Buick 215s so could technically say it's Pontiac powered.

  9. The towers and dam in the back ground tell me this is San Gabriel.

There were Oldsmobile, Buick, and Pontiac 215's, each with different cylinder heads and valve train (but, camshafts and lifters were the same). The Olds have six head bolts around each cylinder, while the others have five. The Buicks have valve covers that were horizontal on the top (nailhead style), so these engines appear to be a Pontiac and an Olds. Regards, Chase

Dean the electrical lines were on the north (other) side of the strip.....I doubt this is San Gabriel.
Plus there's weren't any of those "cobra street lights" around that you can see over the front axle.

Good point, looks like the front engine is an Olds...I learned the bolt pattern the hard way. Jeep Hampshire was running twin F-85's in one of the Herbert cars, and asked us if we had a spare F-85 Olds block. We said sure, as we had one in the back room at Blair's. We loaded it on the trailer with our own race car and proudly presented it to Jeep (for a price, of course). Jeep looked at us incredulously and said "don't you guys know the difference between an aluminum Buick and an aluminum Olds?? I though you guys worked at Blair's??" Yes, the block was a Buick, different head bolt pattern....oh, well....

I was talking with the guy who gave me this pictures, and he said that the red roadster showed up in the new issue of TRJ. Interesting!

Anyone have any info on this car or more pictures? I think the driver was Kenneth Burger out of Cincinnati.
