the money... twice as much to build a poncho than a chevy

  2. Not anymore. A stroker kit with premium parts like Ross Racing pistons, Eagle H beams, Eagle crank, are comparable to others now. Well unless you want to buy cheap rods, cast pistons and shitty crank for Chevy, yes you can buy Chevy parts cheaper.

I love it when guys build a 40,000 dollar car and say that they put a SBC in it because it was cheaper:confused: I normally ask them if it was cheaper to build a Ford car.

  4. Or they put aluminum heads and a bunch of other trick crap on their engine and are doing 13.5s in the quarter when my $999 rebuilt Pontiac 400 is doing 12.5s in a 3810 lb car. Actually in all fairness the $999 was back in 1991 but to build exactly the same as what my engine is today would still be way under $2000. If you want more power, buy a set of Edelbrock heads, install a small roller cam on a 455 and make about 530 HP and 572ft lbs of torque at 4400 RPM!!!!! Nothing else is needed at this RPM.

Heres a link of my beater budget car. If I use the Nitrous, I am 11.75 with the poorest fuel mix. When I hit the nitrous , my engine runs pig rich. Way off the Wide band scale. Way under 10-1 stoich.

One of the first engines that I worked on growing up was a 326. Well------that was before the internet and I had not learned that a 350 Chevy was WAAY superior in all aspects.

I hope you realize now that forming your opinion of all Pontiac motors based on personal experience with a 326 is kind of like basing your opinion of all small block Chevies on experiences with a 307. They were okay for their intended purposes, but not good starting points for performance builds.

Around here by Lake Ontario there's lot's of Cigarette style off shore race style boats.Being the lake is 160 miles long they can run wide open for long periods of time.Majority of boats have Big Block Chevys because that's what Mercury Marine use I told.Typical set up is a supercharged 454 making about 600 hp at 5000 rpm.The local shops building these marine engine tell me that BBC and the occasional 460 Ford can take this power for long periods using readily available components.Pontiac, Old and Caddy big blocks get severe issues like split lifter galleys and such.
There a big difference from a car engine running wide open for 10 seconds and a boat engine running for 30 minutes at full power.
