Putting a fuel cell in the trunk of a Model A Coupe. Several Questions in regard to this : Do all fuel cells have a bladder built into them in case of a rupture ?.I know many fuel cells are put in race cars ,dirt trackers etc, a safety feature.

Second : .I want to be able to fuel the car without opening the trunk lid each time .Looking for a kit with expressible lid for cutting and mounting onto the top of the fender, with tubing and venting. Is there a quality kit that will make the connection easy that you would suggest?

Thanks much ! Gene in Mn

First, no. They will say if they do. They are most often the steel ones, with the rubber bladder inside.

Second, and old-school Cobra-style fuel cap, or old airplane-style cap will do the trick.

I use a Jaguar cap on my Falcon.

Speedway kit is what I used on my HemiRod. Very nice quality, and a fair price.
Fuel cell should have baffles inside, at least. Mine didn't, and every aggressive move or quick stop, and the fuel sloshed-away from the pickup causing the car to bog or stall.

A full SFI/FIA legal fuel cell will have a bladder inside a steel or aluminum box and a circle track tail tank also has a bladder but the cost is going to be prohibitive. What you need is a foam filled regular aluminum (or plastic) tank. The foam will work better than baffles at keeping the fuel from sloshing and there are gauge senders available designed to work in foam filled tanks as well as internal tank mounted pumps for the same application.

I've done several 32s with truck mounted tanks but have stayed away from actual cells as I've always been afraid of the reaction of some of the modern day street blended fuels with the cell foam. I've done a couple with the stainless 18 gal tank from Tanks and also used an aluminum one from Speedway that held 16 and was narrow enough to put the battery beside it. They have worked out great with no problems

Personally I dislike fuel cell in the trunk. I know that model A is limited for space, but there are other ways.

You can get fuel cell foam that will stand up to alcohol. I used 25% methanol carburetors on oval track engines and with the alcohol foam and BUNA N rated fuel hose,(I Think, that was 25 years ago)

Thanks much for the info . Excuse my ignorance, but what is this tank( foam) you are talking about and shouldn't all aftermarket tanks have baffles in them to prevent sloshing,or should,nt one take it for granite that they do? Gene

Most all plastic tanks made for racing (they call them cells) are just rotational molded boxes/shapes and cannot be made with internal baffels, even the flexable cells that are used in Nascar are just balistic nylon/rubber construction housed in a steel box. In order to keep the fuel in place a large open cell foam (brick form) is incerted inside the bladder/container. One must be careful when ordering in order to get foam that is Alc resistant otherwise it breaks down and clogs the pump/filter. It is quicker and eaiser for them to just make a container and install the foam then it is to build an alu tank with baffles. If you do go with a plastic style tank is is imperative that you ground the metal filler to the chassie, because the static electricity that can occurs while filling it can go off

Blocks of open cell foam cut to fit inside of the tank. It works like baffles to keep the fuel from sloshing around. Each foam bubble is like a tiny baffle. It is a type of foam that will not dissolve from the solvents in the fuel.

  13. Yep, some have "safety foam" in them they will also say that. Some come with a roll over switch they will also say that. When I have used a fuel cell that did not need to meet anyone's safety requirements I have cheaped out then used perforated PVC pipe for baffles. You insert it through the filler neck standing up. I like a baffled tank.

Anyway what the gimp says is correct and I wanted to add from my experience.

Ther is some filler caps in the classifieds now that should work for you, or Gimpy's suggestions also work and I have used a jag cap before myself and really like them.
