Photo taken about 40 years ago, a British stock car ---- can anyone hazard a guess to identify these odd valve covers, or are they part of a manifold, or what?? http://www.oldstox.com/images/what motor.jpg I trust one of the eagle-eyed HAMB'ers to help! Cheers.
Check the dude with the hose. He is either trying to suck start the beast or he's trying to find TDC on # 1. What say you?
WOW. Some special craftsmanship there. It looks like the guy on the other side of the car is blowing into or sucking a tube!!!!! Holy COW!
THANK YOU, EVERYONE. H.A.M.B never fails, and unlike most forums, you guys tend to be polite and helpful. I was thinking a big Ford but could not find a decent pic. FYI, the car is a British "F1" stock car --- a bit like old US modifieds. Fully-armoured for full-contact oval racing on shale grit or asphalt 1/4 miles. Play hard or go home was the rule. Bodies stripped off anything old, chassis from a truck or other commercial, and yes, centre seat and steering column angled to the l/h side which is the safe place in left-only racing. These drivers were then (are still are) a rough tough bunch whose tool of choice was a sledge hammer, (and in pit exchanges, a fist). Nowadays they use custom tube frames and $$$$$ and all the rest, professional parts, the way all motor sport has gone. Old fans think they've gone soft. What would Bettenhausen and AJ and Parnelli says about today's Indy kids? Thank you again.
Just for interest, here are today's British stock cars: "sail" wings for running on shale grit, aero for asphalt:
Wow, if you wanna kill an hour or two looking at crazy vintage race car stuff, Google Darkie Wright. The name on that race car.
