I have also seen this mysterious "37" on the side of some 4L60E transmissions. Does anybody know what this means? The speedometer gear has 37 teeth, but I sincerely doubt that's it. :/ Any help solving this mystery is greatly appreciated! ~Jason
Since its cast into the housing, I suspect it may be a, casting number, mold number or core number, as in "Grab the mold for casting 37 and run another batch." I worked at a foundry that cast transmission cases for tractors for a short time. There were 4 or 5 different transmission cases they poured, and each case had a reference number assigned to it. It would not have surprised me if the reference number was cast into the part. I would think if the number was concerning something inside the case, it would have been stamped numbers on a machined pad. Gene
dodge is probably right as , they make several versions of this trans or it can be a mould Id as moulds wear out or get damaged or its a revision and a quality control issue would arrise and and it make it easier to id the mold that has the problems ..
Thanks for the answers. . The tranny will be a backup for my 1997 chevy tahoe.. but because there was a different casting number i believe 52 i wasn't 100% sure it would fit..
There should be a tag number on the trans itself. You might go over to chevytalk.org and go to the 88-98 truck section and make a post. There's a lot of one year only goofy stuff on the 95-00 trucks. For instance I learned the hard way that 95 4L60E trucks have a one year only transmission and one year only computer. But that's the last OBD-I year.
