The one on the left is Virgil Cates. He had a speed shop in Mansfield, Ohio. Bought my first set of wheels there. Later on I believe he ran an Opel, but I don't think I have ever seen pics of it. The car above was in a museum and was for sale.....not sure if it sold or not.

  17. This one really gets around. I took this shot of Nick Cirino's roadster at the March Meet in 1960. Nick was running 10's on gas about this time. Used to see him at San Gabe every Sunday.

Although it looks pretty well dated, this was one of my favorite cars of this era. I always loved that color green it was painted. Tried to match it a few times over the years but couldn't come close.

It was in primer for much of its life, no paint, no chrome...that's the way I remember it at San Gabe...I also saw it at the Smoker's meet on the trailer...didn't know it was the Durfee Automotive until I stopped and looked more closely...but it was innovative (once ran water injection) and it was loud for a gas car...usually held the SG gas roadster record ('cause gas was all that was allowed then)

From Drag News May 1956...this was really fast for the day, especially for 276"

Same issue...think about how far Art Chrisman goes back...this was a year before the fuel ban...roadster was really beautiful, pained either bronze or purple when Harry Duncan ran his engine in it
I realize that these photos are not all that clear, but they are our early history...is it ok to post them anyway??

Cool shot for sure. It always grabs my attention because of the "Roth" like hat. I will make a note in my folder that it's your pic.

With no one in the stands it was probably just a testing session. Of course we all know nothing could ever happen when you're only making test runs. Yeah Right!!!!

  25. Dunn's first NHRA wins came at the 1963 and 1964 Winternationals in AA/A with his third car, the Dunn-Merritt-Velasco supercharged small-block Chevy-powered Fiat. Dunn also won AA/FA at the Bakersfield March Meet those two years and lost only twice, with best times in the 8.9s at 171 mph.
