The 49 sat for over 20 years and I got it real cheap. The engine is in better shape then I thought but the sheet metal was a little worse. This is my first build so I'm just going to have to learn how to patch. With some help from a friend we got it running like a top. It was parked on a fresh rebuild. Im planning on putting discs up front and relocating the shocks. It has a overdrive out of a 50s Dodge so that is nice. Think I will get rid of some of the chrome and lower it. Not going to do anything to crazy yet. We got two little ones so it will be a family cruiser. Never really been a fan of four doors but the price was right and it will work well t
Some in a lot worse condition have been turned into DD. Check out www.rustyhope.com for disc brakes. I have the remnants of a 49 out behind the shop, if you need any bits and pieces they might still be there... .
I have been inspired by losthopes plymouth. I also liked his parts deruster so I made my own tonight. We'll see how it works.
If remaining mostly stock......have you jumped in on the P15-D24 forum for old Chrysler products? link,,http://p15-d24.com/page/index.html
I think it looks pretty damn good! Keep the stance exactly the way it is and the wide whites and you will have a good cruiser. It will be reliable and you will get a ton of looks while driving it. Congrats!
First of many learning experiences. I broke 1 coil off the bottom of the spring. I had planned on cutting 1 off anyhow. If I clean the broke end up will that be fine. Other then that everything came apart pretty good. The rust removing tank seems to be working well.
I see your 49 4 door, I am about to accuire a 49 coronet 2 door sedan myself, i have several ideas of how to make it into a modern dependable daily driver, including the addition of a diesel power plant. Not sure how all this will work out, but I would like to hear from you on how your 4 door is doing from time to time
With it being flat on top and bottom do I have to heat and bend the coil after I cut it. I have read about 10 threads on this but still not sure.
Anyone find a place that sells just the bushings and dust caps for the control arms. I have found several that sell the whole kit. Looks like around 400 for that. kinda steep. It's cold in MN today so my job got shut down. I'm hoping to get the flathead out.
kanter, ebay, etc sells parts, but it's not e-z or cheap to find parts when it comes to mopar. I am running a stock chassis and I love how it rides under my 50 plymouth
Great find!!! I had one in High School Really good car, just watch the revs It will not take to good to high reving ask me I know. Enjoy it I will be following your build!! Don in Indiana
Well it's out. I hope to have it on the stand and cleaning by the weekend. I got a few parts painted And the overdrive off to get the kids.
Install a front shock relocation kit and you will like it even better....it'll still float..just not as bad.
It is supposed to warm up later in the week. Then I can get it on the driveway and clean it up. Also it did not have fluid drive anymore. I am happy about that.
www.robertsmotorparts.com has a lot of replacement mechanical replacement parts available. Body parts are a whole different critter. Gene
My first car was a 49 Dodge Coronet coupe with fluid drive. Deep maroon with wide whites. Very low mileage belonging to the local Chrysler dealers daughter. I learned the hard way those engines don't like to be reved to high too long. Thanks uncle Lester for the rebuild. Nice looking car in any body style. Good luck on the build no matter how you go with it. personally I like all the chrome.
If you haven't sourced parts yet, look up Andy Bernbaum for all kinds of stuff: http://www.oldmoparts.com/ I used ECI my front disc conversion. http://ecihotrodbrakes.com/dodge_plymouth_discbrake_conversions.html They can sell you a complete kit with master cyclinder, brackets hubs, bearings and everything. Fits exactly like it is supposed to on your stock spindles. Call him to get exactly what you need.
