I'm sure it's been covered but I can't find good answers or pictures .... I'm building a 29 ford sedan on a 2x4 frame with speedway 32ford crossmember and speedway axle and speedway split wishbones I'm running the spring BEHIND the axle what are you guys using for steering and steering box pictures help thanks in advance
Question is pretty broad. Depending on what engine, headers, stance, channel or lack there of has a lot to do with what gear box you run... The rest comes after that... So ? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
will the front end be suicide or frame over the axle One thing to be aware of with the spring behind is that the tie rod and spring shackles tend to be in the same space. JW
Looking to keep it low it has 4 inch front z and a bbc no headers yet would like to use block huggers it's frame over axle using a 32 crossmember not a suicide perch
Also looking to run a 32 grill any pictures would help I keep trying to upload pictures from my phone but says file size to big?
Sounds similar to my setup 4" dropped axle with the spring behind. I'm running a vega box cross style steering. Keep the spring as high as you can bc the tie rod runs right under it. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
With a kick-up up front a traditional fixed box/column is most likely out... I would run reversed corvair or vega and cross steer... Block huggers will need all the clearance you can give them... So I'd go corvair up close to firewall, with the shaft/pitman arm through the frame. Spring hung behind probably means deep dropped arms to clear the spring shackles. Depending on where your radiator is it's probably in the way too. I'm assuming its in front of the crossmember or it's very short... Of course none of this could be helpful information at all... Thanks guys those pictures with the vega box helped I have thought about the reverse corvair with steering arm up at 12:00 and I thought about running the cross bar for the spindles out front insted of in the rear but I heard it might drive bad
Is this how your front end looks? That's spring behind with a vega box Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
You can run with the tie rod out front as long as correct Ackerman came be achieved, research AND understand how and why regarding Ackerman. JW
Quick word of advise, that crossmember is meant to set into stock rails, un boxed. What I mean is the front end of your frame will be much to wide, notice how little room between your bones and frame rail... Un-tack it and trim around 1 7/8" off each end of it. Set a grill shell up there and you'll see what I'm talking about... Hope this helps.. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Barett... I was looking and I know what you are saying stock 32 inside measurement is 23-1/4 mine is 24-3/4 I did shorten it a little but I was hopeing for more room for headers ect. Was thinking of tapering the rails to3/4 or 1 inch so it wouldn't look so wide head on with a grill ..... I am open to all ideas and suggestions though Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Seb I see the supports you were talking about in that other picture Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I don't know how to post a link but if you can find my build thread, early on there are some pictures of the frame work (similar to yours). I'd sacrifice beating hell out of the headers if it meant an awkward looking nose. I could be wrong but in your picture it looks like the rails may be parallel al the way. Narrow the front, and taper back to the further most outside of the cowl.. Should give you room for headers depending on where your engine sits... Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Barett I'll look now there is a taper it comes out of the cowl as wide as the cowl I'll do some looking because front is just tacked can cut it apart easy lol hard tell in picture Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
All swell at cowl then, just trying to help, any questions just ask... Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Barely thanks for the pointer just went outside to look at might take a inch off each side your pictures of your frame look good my biggest thing is I want it to drive nice so I'm open to all ideas panhard bar steering stabilizer Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Understandable, your on the right track to tracking right... Get it? If you go vega the pan hard bar is a must... Between your crossmember and bones your axle caster will be right. So no worries it will steer/ ride fine... Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Barret better it will look much better with grill now only a little frame sticking out and I might tapper the ends so even less shows Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I used a vega steering box with a panhard bar. Tricky getting the steering linkage under the bones. This is my first attempt at this kind of build but it seams to be working good. I had to bend the panhard bar to clear pitman arm.....just like a Jeep. Much info available on how to correctly set up length and attachment points.
There ya go, what's the distance from the firewall to the crossmember? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
